Question:
Why do I feel like a tractor trailer ran me over immediately after eating?
I FEEL NAUSEAs after I eat and I hate the feeling that comes over me after I've eaten. A FEEL OF TOTAL NON-WELLNESS. I get extremely tired and fatigued, like I just want to lay down, I feel so, so so weak. But 20 minutes later, I feel fine. My friends have noticed the change in me right after I eat. They say my face looks exhausted. I also can't stand the smell of food after I've eaten. I just want it away from me. I'm not eating any milk, or ice cream, or anything super heavy. I CAN EAT ABOUT 10 OZ. OF FOOD (1 CUP & A 1/4 CUP). IS THIS UNUSUAL? I'm happy I can eat more than I thought cuz, 1 cup of food isn't a whole lot. — barbsbasic (posted on June 22, 2003)

Barbara, This sounds like a mild dumping reaction. Are you following your
surgeon's plan as far as foods and quantity? Are you eating quite a few
carbs? For 3-1/2 months PO, 10 ounces seems like a quite a bit. I realize
my surgeon's plan is quite different and therefore it is not reasonable to
compare to what I eat, but even people who are on plans that use more food
don't typically seem to eat this much at the stage you are at. I know if I
eat too much I am miserable. Last night I ate about 1/2 ounce more and all
I wanted to do was throw up. I tried but to no avail. I finally drank
something and that moved it through a little and I was some better.
<p>I would take a look at the things you are eating, as the problem
is 99% chance coming from there. Focus on the protein and veggies and
fruit and cut way back on any refined carbs and see if that helps. If the
food is moving through okay then it should not be serious. If it's sitting
like a stone for hours then contact the surgeon. He/she may need to scope
you to be sure your stoma hasn't blocked some.

I'll tell you that I feel like that too when I eat too much. 10 oz of food
seems like a lot for you having surgery in March. I had my surgery in
December, and I am up to 4 oz of food...sometimes I can eat 5 oz, and if
it's really soft, I could get away with 6 oz, but there is no way I could
get up to 10. My doc has me at 8 to 10 oz after a year post op. I think
you should talk to your doctor about this, you might just be eating too
much and it's making you feel like crap

Ohhhh! Man! You are DUMPING!!! Big Time! It isn't always the amount of food
you eat that causes this... or the type! I dump on veggies! Seriously!!
What ARE you eating?? Email me, okay?? I can really help you with this if I
know more!

I agree that it sounds like you are dumping badly. I can dump on almost
anything including high protein. It varies from day to day. Yesterday, I
dumped on peanuts. You never know. Are you eating a lot of fruit or
veggies? I know that I almost always dump from tomato based sauces or
soups. Fresh tomatoes don't bother me but tomato soup or spaghetti sauce
(even no sugar added) really causes me problems.

Yes, being able to eat 10 oz. of food at one time at 3 months post-op is
unusual. It's about twice what I could eat at that point post-op. Don't
know what you're eating, so can't comment on whether this is dumping or
not.

Yes, I would agree that sounds exactly like dumping. However, I notice that
sometimes if I eat too much, I have a similar reaction...here is what I
have learned to do. When I say, "this will be my last bite." I
actually don't have it. If I do, I have the same reaction you do...probably
eating too much and your body is reacting to the extra food it doesn't
need. Try to eat slower and stop when you are "starting to feel
full" not when you are full. It takes a few minutes to realize you are
full, even after the WLS.

In addition to what the others have said.. are you sipping with meals? How
long does it take to eat said oz? I'm almost 9 yrs postie and I an eat
that much sometimes. But not every time. I would prefer NOT to eat that
much. I'm thinking it is dumping, but from eating too much food OR sipping
while eating--same, same in that it "attacks" the intestine and
creates a crisis there. Have yu tried cuttin down to about 4 ozx, be done
in 15 minutes, then just continue with the social part of the meal?

In reading your profile, I noticed that you found that you were very hungry
soon after surgery-- this fact combined with the larger than usual amount
of your meals intake makes me think that you are probably just over-eating.
I have gotten the exact same feeling that you describe when I have eaten
too much-- it's not the cold sweats and flu-like symptoms of dumping,
rather it just sounds like you are straining your system.
I can't imagine having been as athletic as you were in adulthood and then
gaining weight after an injury (I was a runner in high school when I blew
out my knee so I had all of adulthood to work on my bad eating habits).
But chances are, you are just used to eating larger quantities of healthy
food and are not quite adapting to your new pouch size.
You've shown tremendous discipline all your life, and your before and after
pictures show great results, so I wouldn't worry too much about the success
you will have in trying to adjust to smaller portions.
