Question:
When will my hair stop fallin out?

I had open RNY almost 4 months ago and a little over a month now my hair has been falling out at an alarming rate, i'm starting to get self consious about it i went from thick hair to very thin to the point where i can see my scalp. When will this stop? I'm very worried it will become noticable to others very soon if it keeps falling out the way it has. Does Nioxin really work?    — Julie C. (posted on April 14, 2003)

I also suffered hair loss that was quite disturbing to me. No one else seemed to notice (other than my sylist) that the hair loss was so great. My stylist also said not to use Nioxin as the hair that comes back tends to be course and difficult to work with. The hair loss stopped at about 6-7 months. I am now 10 months out and have lots of new growth that is curlier than before! Don't fret ... it will end soon. >Mindy

I agree with Mindy. I also lost alot of hair, only people who really knew me noticed, but it really bothered me. It has finally stopped, (I started losing in month 3 and it stopped in month 7). The texture was really different too. I spent hundreds of dollars on shampoos, vitamins..... you name it. I think if you are one that loses hair, you just have to ride it out. Some lose a little, some (like us) lose alot. But don't worry, I hear it's very rare to lose so much that you would need a wig. Mine is starting to grow back (serious itchys on the head), so I should notice it looking thicker in a month or so. Hang in there! Before you know it, this will just be another memory of the past.

Open RNY 10/30/02. My hair started falling out in HANDFULS at about 2 1/2 to 3 months post op. It is almost 5 1/2 months and is beginning to slow measurably. My hair was rather thin to begin with, so I didn't need this! It's a small price to pay. They all say it grows back and you never go BALD! Well, THANK GOODNESS!

Most lose hair between months 3-6, though it varies for some. It is annoying but will grow back, and in some cases, thicker and healthier. Nioxin and all the other shampoos and vitamins, I don't believe work at all-its just a matter of time.

From the posts below, I see where your hair will eventually grow back. So what about us that are shiny on top to begin with? Will WLS help us with that too? :)
