Question:
Lactose/Dairy Intolerant- 17 Days pre-op, what can I drink for protein?
I am total dairy intolerant. My Doctor requires a liquid diet pre-op. His recommended liquid is Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast. I tried that and I cannot use it. I have also tried Boost and Ensure (on doctors recommendation). They also didn't work out. All give me terrible stomach aches with headache and diarrea. I have to start Tuesday with something..... HELP!! please. — Angi A. (posted on April 12, 2003)

I am just two weeks post-op. I know that you said that you tried Boost,
but while I was in the hospital they gave me Boost Breeze. It is not milk
based and it comes in mixed berry and tropical breeze. Good luck!

Were you lactose intolerant before surgery? Although many people are
lactose intolerant after WLS, you may not be if your basis is coming from
drinking the carnation, boost or ensure. While they do have milk, you may
jsut be getting sick from all the sugar in them. the carnation is no sugar
added, so there is still 7 grams inthere, plus the 12 or 16 from milk.
Boost and Ensure are loaded with sugar, don;t know why any surgeon would
recommend them, so you are probably hurting real bad from all this. I also
use Isopure, it's pure protein drink and is pre-bottled. Not telling you to
test it necessarily, but if you are just basing the lactose thing on those
drinks, then you may be able to eat cheese. I'd check with the doc about
this stuff, and def. stay away from boost and ensure b/c you're dumping on
them. Goodluck to you!

My surgeon recommends Lactose Free Slim Fast for a protein supplement. I
have one a day and love it. I mix the powder with 8 ounces of cold water,
shake it and then freeze it til its almost solid and eat it with a spoon.

I am lactose intolerant since surgery. I use protein powder with water.
For that reason I usually use the fruity protein powders (nice and light
and good with water). I ordered a bunch of samples of all flavors from
vitalady and tried a lot of them but the fruit ones are the ones that go
down well and sit right. Before surgery I used water in my vanilla and
chocolate protein drinks and thickened with a small amount of instant sugar
free jello pudding. But since surgery I cannot tolerate the chocolate and
vanilla (don't know why). I also like the Designer Protein Blast (very
tangy but good). I don't use Carnation Instant Breakfast because I don't
think it has enough bang (protein) for the buck but if I use milk (in
coffee and cereal) I use Lactaid or some lactose free milk. My suggestion
is to order samples of all flavors of protein powders and then experiment
with them and find your own taste and preferences.

Another option might be Proscore 100 Chocolate, which is a whey protein
powder, but is also lactose-free. With two scoops, you get 32 grams of
protein, 4 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat, & no sugar, and I like it
with just water (especially if it's put in the freezer for 15 minutes or so
first). You can order a sample to try it from vitalady.com (which I don't
work for!) to avoid getting stuck with a whole tub of it if it doesn't work
out for you.

Real Meals can be mixed with water or milk. It has 60 grams of protein
plus over 40 other vitamins. They have a ton of dairy free recipes for
protein shakes on their site. Go to www.protein-solution.com

The ProBlend55 is lactose free and aspartame free. It provides 55 grams of
protein in two scoops and is a blended whey. I order mine from
www.dpsnutrition.com where I've found the best price. I drink three shakes
a day and figure each costs me about $1.58, including shipping, a perfect
meal at a cheap price. Good luck to you. Nina in Maine

For the first few weeks I used No added sugar Carnation Instant Breakfast
mixed with 1/2 cup of egg beaters instead of milk (no more milk for me
either!), and a 1/2 scoop of Genisoy plain protein powder. This tasted
great to me. Now I have gone to a couple of favorites from
Vitalady...these have low or no lactose and very low sugar...unlike the
Carnation Instant Breakfast.

Hello Wls friend,
I too was told by my SURGEON (who is a wonderful surgeon) to buy ensure and
boost products. So before surgery I purchased several cases of ensure and
boost protein drinks (boy was I mad when I discovered that I could not
drink the ensure drinks!!!!). However, on my last day in the hospital
after WLS surgery, the dietician paid me a visit and told me not to under
any circumstances use any of the ensure or the boost products. As a matter
of fact she told me to buy Optimum Whey 100% protein, which is lactose-free
and only 1 gram of sugar (low carbohydrate product) with 22 grams of high
protein. It taste great and I mix it with non-fat powdered skim milk. I
start my day off with this shake and it comes in vanilla ice cream,
chocolate and strawberry. I absolutely love the vanilla ice cream. Since
I add the non-fat milk, it makes the shake 30 grams of protein.
I wasted my money on the ensure and boost products, however, I gave all of
the boost and ensure drinks to a relative. I highly recommend optimum Whey
Protein Powder, it sales at GNC and the great thing about GNC is if you buy
a protein powder or anything for that matter, and you don't like it or if
it does not agree with you then you can take it back for a refund of
exchange. Please go on vitalady.com also to purchase protein samples and
to check out other WLS products. Hope this helps...
Good luck, shirley

I also use the Optimum Whey 100% Whey, both Double Rich Chocolate and
Vanilla Ice Cream. I find they taste just fine in water-- the Vanilla is
especially delicious. I've also had them in lactose free milk and enjoyed
them as well, but I don't know if you can drink that. Good luck!
