Question:
Has anyone been thru WLS & menopause at the same time?
I don't know much about menopause yet, but I'll turn 51 this year and it's looking like I'll have WLS this summer. Wonder if I should go thru it or wait. Anyone been thru both at the same time? THANKS — beachesgal (posted on April 1, 2003)

I had a complete hysterectomy last year (she took everything including
ovaries) and am going through forced menopause. I had my wls in Jan 03..
actually my hyst was 1 yr ago to do the day of my wls. As long as I make
sure to take my premarin I do not have any problems. I have tried some of
the natural remedies and they work as well. My biggest concern was the hot
flashes. With the proper dosage of hormones I do fine. It has not affected
my weight loss any. I lose a steady 3-4lbs a week.... Laurey

Hi, I'm 33 and had to have a Complete Hysterectomy 8 mos. before my RNY.
I'm 10 mos. out from my RNY and I have noticed in the last 3-4 mos. that
it's very important that I DO NOT forget my Premarin or I have menopausal
symptoms. I never used to be so sensitive to forgetting to take my hormones
for a couple of days, but now, for some reason I can't get away with it.
Menopause or not, we all go through the emotional roller coaster after
surgery. I believe that going through Natural Menopause is more difficult
then "Surgical Menopause" like I had, but I think you'll do just
fine! What a wonderful time in your life, WLS and moving onto the next
chapter of womanhood! Good Luck to You!!!

Yes, I was going through menopause when I got my surgery. I still am going
through it actually. I don't take hormones, I use the herb black cohosh
and I'm actually having less menopause symptoms since surgery and having a
much easier time of it. The weight loss helps you feel better mentally and
physically.
