Question:
As you all know I have been denied by Bluecross BlueShield...

My policy has a written EXCLUSION. I guess I will just have to accept that. My DH has gone to the HR person at work and they have also contacted the insurance people with no luck. I have contacted my state insurance commissioner, but there is no law in South Carolina that WLS has to be paid for by an insurance company. I really don't think a lawyer will be able to help either. Here's my question...Please let me know of any surgeons that are near South Carolina that will accept self-pay...I know they probably ALL will, but I need a good CHEAP on. Out of the country is OUT OF THE QUESTION, my hubby said we must stay here and get it done. We don't have any money, but I despreately need this surgery. PLEASE, someone help me come up with a solution...I am getting so depressed.. I read all of the posting where everyone is losing and I AM SO HAPPY for you, but at the same time I am a little jealous. I have been praying, but I am getting so discouraged. Rehab is out...they don't do it here...a job? I am not really physically able to hold a full time job.... Another insurance policy? I have searched on the internet with no luck...It would probably be too expensive anyway. Thanks for listening to me whine!    — cindyedens (posted on February 25, 2003)

Cindy, I,too have BC/BS with a written exclusion. I self paid here in New Mexico. My surgeon does open RNY at our University hospital. The financial people were great. I make a monthly payment to the hospital and one to the Doctor. They look at what we can pay and my payments are very reasonable. No finance charges either. Jeff and I aren't made of money and have 3 teen who will be in college in the next few years. Best $12K I ever spent. Margie in NM Open RNY 9-7-01 252/130ish

Please just be sure that the written exclusion says morbid obesity and not just obesity. Most BCBS policies cover WLS if you meet the normal qualifications. Do you have a BCBS HMO? This might actually be excluded because your husbands employer asked that it be excluded to keep policy costs down. Please just be absolutely sure. <p>Most places that I have heard of require the cash up front. Could you take a home equity loan on your house, assuming you own a home? Sorry, wish I could be more help.
