Question:
Counting Calories after surgery and metabolism
From all of my diets I seem to remember that you could take your ideal weight and multiply times 15 to determine the number of calories you can eat if you get moderate exercise. After surgery, can you still follow this rule or is a long term effect of this kind of weight loss a sluggish metabolism? — Lynn B. (posted on February 2, 2003)

Females current weight multiplied by 9 if sedentary, 11 if active gives you
the # of calories it takes to maintain your current weight. Subtract 600
cal. a day from that # to lose 2# a week. Males multiply by 11 if
sedentary and 13 if active. However...adipose tissue doesn't metabolize
calories as well as "normal" tissue so when obese the formula has
to take into consideration excess fat. Hope this helps.

My surgeon would tell you to get out of the diet mentality and LIVE. We
have surgery because we say we have no life and then keep on repeating all
the things that failed for us our whole lives. The new rules: eat protein
first, veggies, carbs. Take your supplements and be more active.
My two cents added is the more we obsess over our food, exercize etc.
the more of a chore recovery and our trip down the scale becomes. Make
every day an adventure and live like an active, genetically thin person
does.
