Question:
Any 5'0
I posted yesterday, but didn't receive any response (although it was somewhat of a sad day, and everyone's thoughts were on the sad loss of our brave astronauts), so I thought I'd try again. I'm really interested to hear from shorter women about how their weight came off after surgery. When I used the diagnostic calculator on the site to show a possible loss scenario for my stats, it estimated I would probably only lose 60% of the weight I need to lose, and at a possible rate of only 4 or 5 lbs a month, trickling down to a pound a month after 3 months. Is this realistic? I'm still somewhat undecided about the surgery, have gotten my referral to see the specialist surgeon in our area, and am attending his seminar in April. Any information would be greatly appreciated! — sweetmana (posted on February 2, 2003)

I am 5'1" and have lost 100 pounds and I am at goal of 110 pounds. This
is 12 poinds lower than the ideal weight on the calculator but a good size
for me. After the first three months I lost about 10 pounds a month until
about the 7th or 8th month when it went to about a pound a week. Hope this
helps.

I'm 5'0" and started out at 205 (BMI 40). I'm 2 1/2 months post op
open RNY and have lost 40lbs. I lost the weight in the first 6 weeks, and
have been on a "plateau" for the past month. My family says that
they notice a difference, so maybe I'm losing inches?!?

I AM 5'1 AND AM 4.5 MONTHS OUT. AS OF TODAY I HAVE LOST 53LBS.I STARTED AT
274LBS. IT IS VERY SLOW BUT ITS OK. I FIND MYSELF DOUBTING IF MY SURGEON
DID THINGS RIGHT BECAUSE OF JUST HOW SLOW IT IS. I GET MANY PLATUES AND GO
BACK TO ALL LIQUIDS FOR 3 DAYS TO BREAK THEM. MY ENTIRE FAMILY IS OVER
WEIGHT AND MY COUNSELOR TOLD ME THAT LOSING SLOW IS NORMAL DUE TO MY
GENES. SHE SAYS IT WILL COME OFF BUT EVERYONE IS DIFFERANT AND IT CAN TAKE
UP TO 2 YEARS. IF YOU DECIDE TO HAVE THE SURGERY AND WANNA KNOW WHAT TO
EXPECT AT THE HOSPITAL, PLEASE CHECK OUT MY PROFILE I HAVE THINGS LISTED
ABOUT 1/2 WAY DOWN WITH THE DATE OD 9-20-02. PLEASE WRITE IF YOU HAVE ANY
QUESTIONS!

I'm 5'2, 12days post-op and down 27 lbs. Started at 257. I'm sure I won't
keep losing at this rate, but it does kind of keep my hopes up I can get to
goal. Good luck on your journey.

The calculator doesn't sound quite right. While you will lose alot during
the first 3 months, it definitely should be more than 5 pounds a month.
You will continue to lose up until 18 months post-op. It does start to
slow down for most around the 8-12 months post-op period as we begin to eat
more and our bodies take time to adjust to the rapid loss. A pound a month
after 3 months post-op! No, it will be much higher than that! You can't
exactly predict how much you will lose each and every month, as everyone's
metabolism and rate of loss is different, even those who start at the same
height and weight as you-you will lose at your own pace. The good thing to
note is that we all lose.

I am 5'2" and was 250lbs. I'm still 5'2" :-D and am now 147lbs.
after only 8 months- i'm not sure what the percentage is, but i don't care
b/c people say I look good, but even better I feel good and can exercise
w/o breathing hard!! It may be slower weight loss to others, but hey, it's
great for me! I can't believe I fit into juniors size clothing again! I
wear a size 8 and size Medium in most clothes and I'm only like 15 lbs.
away from my goal. Goodluck to you!

Hi there, A Sweetman! I am 5'1" and started out at 323 and I'm
currently 222.. that's a total loss of 101 lbs. I had open RNY on Sept.
23, 2002, which is a little over 4 months now. Of course I started at a
higher weight, but I think the loss has been pretty good so far, at least
I'm not complaining! Just make sure you follow what your doctor tells you
and lean of the wonderful people here for support. Vi

Thanks to everyone for your posts, and for sharing your stories/stats with
me! I appreciate the information. I haven't seen many women with my height,
and my curiosity was really getting the better of me! This site is so chock
full of good information and personal experiences that I come here at least
3 times a day to read the posts, and to look at the inspirational photos.
Thanks again, everyone!

In reviewing the previous posts, I notices that most of those responding
have had good results - getting to goal weight or very close to it. You
should know that not everyone gets there though. I am 5'1" tall and
54 yrs. old. I had the RNY done 3 years ago. My starting weight was
268lbs. I lost weight slowly for 10 months and then quit completely. I now
weigh 185 and struggle to stay there ( having gone up to 194 and back).
Perhaps my 40 years of yo yo dieting is partly to blame for my sluggish
metabolism. I did all sorts of diets from Weight Watchers to liquid protein
but nothing ever got me into the normal weight range. Even though I would
love to lose more the 60% excess weight that I did lose was worth it. I no
longer have asthma or cluster and migraine headaches constantly so the loss
has been worth it.Even if you don't get to goal, the improvement in health
may be worth it for you. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Hi! I'm 5'1" and started out at 276lbs. After 9 1/2 months I've lost
112lbs and I'm now at 164...and stuck on a horrible plateau! ;-( But have
NO Doubt that I will get to goal.

Hi, I am 53 and had Lap RNY 12/05/03.I have lost 40 lbs..but seem to be at
a stand still this week. I started out at 261 lbs.

I'm 5'1 and I started out at 332lbs and I now weigh 169lbs. I am 11 months
rny post op and down 163lbs. I lost about 3 to 5 lbs a week consistantly
until about 3 weeks ago. It suddenly turned into 1 lb a week but everyone
says the last 30 to 50 lbs are the slowest. I'll take slow and steady
anyday as long as the pounds are still coming off. Good luck
