I thought I was in heaven when I ate some refried beans with cheese from
our favorite mexican restaurant. It was so different and tasty. I think
taco bell has some.

If you are on clear liquids there are not that many options ( I was hungry
the whole time). If you are up to pureed foods cook anything you like to
eat and just stick it in the food processor! I also used a lot of tuna,
eggs, chicken and fish. Remember that soft does not mean bland! I also
enjoyed very soft lean meatloaf, Wendys chili, and warmed up Ricotta cheese
with some tomatoe sauce (stuffed shells without the shells) I stuck
exclusively to protein so I can't give too many "non protein
choices" but don't be afraid to try warm soft foods, just go slowly
and trust your judgement! My head knew before my stomach what was going to
be OK and what wasn't. Enjoy!

Are you nearing the pureed stage yet? I loved Italian Beef cooked all day
in the crockpot, then pureed...yummy. My first "real food." If
you cook it long enough you can practically puree it yourself in the
chewing process...just remember SMALL BITES. Good Luck, you are on your way

The difference in surgeons and philosophies is unreal. I had a open R/Y on
12-5-02 and they wouldn't let me leave the hospital until i was eating
pureed foods, on the 4th day after surgery. I have been eating regular food
since the ist week, i am down 31 pounds so far and just can't believe all
the different responses from everyone. i have tried every imaginable food
that is available and the only thing that is hard to get down is steak,
even small bites and chewed until my jaw cramps, but everything else is
tasting great, good luck everyone. (Post-Op 12-5-02)

if you on puree cut anything into pencil eraser sized bits and chew to
death. This idea from my surgeon works great.

My surgeon has me on a liquid diet for 3 weeks, then a soft-food diet for 3
weeks, then slowly add in table food for 3 weeks. Well... I did the
liquid stage ok - but I only stuck to soft foods for a week because I
craved something to chew!! Please try to stick to your doctors plan for
as long as you can... but if you just have to break it... go in very small
pieces and chew chew chew!!

during soft stage I was allowed to eat any crunchy food that could be
dissolved in water (saltines, corn chips, etc.). Satisfied the need to
chew and crunch. Wonderful! Ask your doc if this is ok for you.

I felt the same way Nadine. Well, at first the sight, smell, and thought
of food made me want to die. I had no interest in food and said I would
never eat again. Why did I feel this way? I was in the hospital and I
couldn't even eat Jell-O. The very thought of it made me want to vomit. I
barely drank in the hospital but I did manage the ice chips. When I got
out of the hospital I was reading all the questions/responses and I was
mortified at what recent post ops were eating when I could barely drink 8oz
of liquid a day. I lived on ice chips. I refused broth and I refused
Jell-O. I was to be on the liquid diet until 10 days post-op when I had my
follow-up appointment with my surgeon. He then graduated me to soft mushy
foods like tofu, scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese. Gag me now! The only
thing I liked was eggs and once I had them twice I never wanted them again.
Life was a living hell those first weeks. I wondered when I would be able
to eat normal things. I have to admit that I'm a very cautious eater when
it comes to my new pouch (Open RNY 11/11/02) but I don't want to hurt
myself. My roommate in the hospital was already eating chicken & beef
3 weeks out and I could barely drink. It was so disheartening and I
wondered, what the hell did I do to myself? But eventually when all the
post-op pain went away and I decided to venture out a little life got
easier. They say each day is better and that is so true. I have eaten
deli meats, turkey, chicken, and a few other things that I swore I would
never eat because I was so scared. I must admit I had a problem the 2nd
time I had chicken and I'm swearing chicken off as of right now. But now
that I can eat 'hot meals' I don't want them. I have no interest in food
whatsoever. I look in the fridge, freezer, and cabinets and they are full
(at my parents house). I constantly look in them for SOMETHING. ANYTHING.
And I find NOTHING that I can have or want. So even though I've been
graduated to try new foods I am still stuck at peanut butter and tuna. I
used to be a big pasta eater (as a college student it was a staple) but now
I can't do that. I wake up in the morning (or the afternoon depending on
the day) thinking/feeling like I'm hungry. I look around and find NOTHING
so I go without. I barely eat and I know it's hindering my weight loss but
I have absolutely no interest in food. Sometimes I'll try something new
and after a few bites spit out what's in my mouth and throw away the
remaining portion. So I feel your pain. I've been there...I am there.
I'm almost 2 months post-op and while some things have gotten a lot easier
the eating aspects feel like they will never be corrected. I know everyone
is going to think I'm nuts that I don't eat when I am able to but I get
sick just thinking about eating. They say that we used to live to eat but
now we eat to live...we used to be obsessed with food and it ruled our
lives but even though I'm not eating I feel like it plays a bigger role in
my life now than it did before. The only things I like are skim milk and
tea. I eat peanut butter crackers and tuna but I don't LIKE them. I eat
them because I know I have to eat something. So good luck with your
journey. I believe the learning never stops and as much as you research
this surgery as a pre-op you can never be prepared for what is REALLY going
to happen. But I'll take each day as it comes and try a little harder and
I hope you can do the same!

Nadine, at your stage you should be able to eat alot of soft and hot foods.
The refried beans with melted cheese is a great one. Also, chili is great
at your stage. One of my other early favorites was crab cakes. They are
very soft. Also steamed white fish with very mushy vegetables, like
squash, is great. Just use your imagination. Many post-ops take perfectly
normal food and puree it. I actually skipped the puree stage and just
ensured that my food was soft or chewed very well.

Hot foods that might satisfy your need would be cream-of-wheat made with
unsweetened soy milk, peanut butter, and some artificial sweetner. I also
ate string cheese and just chewed it to death. Hang in there, your body is
healing and needs a chance to do a good job. Good Luck!

I am 2 weeks post op and feel the same way as all of you have expressed. I
look at my food options and then would rather not eat at all. I have found
thst some things like chili, mashed potatoes or twice baked potatoes are
good and I will have to try refried beans with cheese. I did have tomato
soup with mozzeralla cheese melted on it and that was good too.
