Question:
Has anyone came home from surgery and stayed by theirself?

My mother wants me to stay at her house for about a week after being discharged from hospital. I have an 11 year old son, and if I do that he will have no way to get to and from school. He rides a school bus from home and my mother lives in a different school district. She is afraid for me to go home by myself. Has anyone else gone home alone or with kids right after surgery? (I am divorced) I would have to make meals for my son and such. Do you think I should try to do this myself or not? Surgery date is next Thursday, Oct. 10th. Thank you! Patty    — Patricia C. I had open rny on 9-30-02. My family is home at night, but I am alone during the day. I don't think I would want to be making anyones meals, but being home alone is no problem.

I had LAP-RNY on 09/26, and I came home alone the next day. I've been here by myself since and have done great. No problems whatsoever. I guess it would depend on what type of surgery you're having, though. Best of luck to you! :-)

I am wondering if your mother would be able to come to your house and spend a week or so. That would help you alot and she could help get your son off to school. Good Luck

Hi. I had open RNY on 9/26 and I'm doing fine by myself. I do have people check in on me during the day, usually by phone, but there's someone available if I need something. My sisters offered to come stay with me but I know myself and I know I'd be more comfortable alone in the begining while I recover. Frankly, I'm happy and surprised by how much I've been able to do myself. Is it possible for your mother to stay with you or at least drop by? As for your son, if he's fairly self-sufficient then you may be okay recovering at home. Batch cook then freeze single serve meals for him before you go in. Best wishes.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. There is no way my mom can come stay with me. She does Daycare during the week, which would make that immpossible. I think I'd be okay doing this. The only problem, I feel, would be making meals for my son. Thanks again---Patty

I wouldn't be too concerned about your son's "meals". He'll eat. At age 11, he should be fairly self-succient in that area anyway and this would be a good time for him to learn.(I have an 11 year old, too). I was home with husband and kids and about 1 week post op, they all CLEARED OUT for 3 weeks of vacation. THAT was the best thing. Once my drain tube was out and I could drive again, I was OK (Actually, I needed a scope while they were away, and some relatives helped me get to and from the hospital).

I had open RNY on Wednesday and came home on Saturday. My husband went back to work on Monday and I was by myself during the day. I did great. I could have had someone stay with me, but I decided I would rather be alone. It worked out fine. Good luck.

I stayed all by myself after surgery. It was actually a good incentive to do my walking because I would walk up to walgreens quite often. The worst part about it, I thought, was that I was lonely. But you have your son. =)
