Question:
Does food ever taste like it did before surgery?

I'm 6wks post-op, food all seems to taste blaa. The foods I really liked that I can still eat without guilt, don't taste the same, is this temporary or will food never taste as good again. I'm happy with my progress and have had no major problems, so I guess eather way it was worth it, It is just that it would be nice to be able to truly enjoy the small portions of food I am eating now. Has anyone else gone through this or is it just me?    — Linda C. (posted on October 5, 2002)

I am four months post op and my tastes have completely changed. Some of my pre-op favorites I hate now and vice versa. Keep trying different things

Unfortunately yes. Your early on, and likely in ketosis. Your body is burnuing itself and your loosing weight big time. This affects how stuff tastes. Its only temporary. After awhile this ends, and your appetite returns and stuff tastes good again. Personally I prefered it better when I had NO appetite and didnt care.. I once went 3 days without eating... Relax, yours is a temporary problem...

Most things I eat are ok, but somethings certainly don't taste quite as good to me.. mostly I think that's because I really don't have the fat in my diet I used to.. all the taste in food is mostly in fat, sugar, and salt... that said.. I've found that I really like things highly seasoned.. latin things, curries.. and things made with really fresh herbs and spices...

Let me add some foods I have lost interest in like milkshakes. Thank goodness. Other things I didnt care for now taste great like loraine swiss cheese. So tastes DO change. Unfortunately some bad choices still taste good, like oreos:( Try to avoid the bad choices during the fast easy losss phase. Why slow your loss at its easiest time? Take advantage of it!

i think alot of things do taste the same...ans some worse/better. My senses have become so much more acute, that fast/fatty foods make me sick to my stomach and others still make my mouth water. I am cooking 2 lbs of shrimp right now, and YUMMY they sure smell good. And, taste the same too. oh, I am 7 wks out.

I sometimes wish I had surgery on my taste buds instead of my stomach. To me, a cookie still tastes as good as it did before surgery. The only difference is now I can walk away with a piece of one instead of a whole bag. I can tell it will continue to be a struggle to avoid the bad foods of life, and I can assume it will just get harder to avoid them as the honeymoon of surgery wears off down the road. I don't think my taste buds have changed a bit...and I wish they had.

I went through the same thing. Everything tasted crapy to me. Unfortunately after about 10 weeks, my "normal" taste buds came back with a vengence!! I now enjoy all the foods I did before, just not as much of them.
