Question:
What if I only have 5lbs to go before I know I will qualify?
Ok I need to weigh at least 100lbs to qualify for surgery. My weight sways back and forth. Some days I am 100lbs over and some days I am 95 lbs over. I want qualify in an honest matter (no change in the pockets or heavy shoes). How can I make sure I am 100+ pounds over by 10/8/02. Is there anything I can eat to gain and keep that extra 5 pounds? I hate asking this but I am desperate to get approved. — Jan S. (posted on October 2, 2002)

Salt for the next while - water weight should do it. Then do the heavy
meal thing. And be sure to not pee until AFTER you're weighed - you know,
just to make sure. Funny I never would have thought of how to make myself
HEAVIER!! But good luck.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I don't know your surgeon, but mine
didn't even weigh me at my consult. But even they do weigh you, explain
that you go up & down 5 or 10 lbs & explain your cormorbidities
(spelling??). Whatever they are. Some surgeons are sticklers & other
are not. Try getting in touch with some of his/her previous patients &
ask them what occured at their consult. But don't stress on it yet. It
hasn't happened. Eat what you want when you want. Drink what you want when
you want. Relax. You've made the decision, just focus on that. Take a deep
breath. I do understand your concern & don't want to discount it, &
I also want to support you in knowing that whatever your decision is, you
will be supported!!!!!!!

Most of us retain water the week before our period. Maybe you could try to
schedule during that time and eat lots of salty potato chips! I never
thought of water retention as a good thing before . . . LOL

Thank for answering my question with out giving me a lecture about trying
to gain weight(like I have seen on prev. postings). I only have a few
pounds to go. Thank you for the support. About having a full bladder when
being weighed-can't do it I have a little bladder problem and would not
want to have an 'accident' on the scale. Thank you again.

Please keep in mind that all these suggestions to increase your salt could
increase your blood pressure. Lets not have a stroke before getting
approved. Five pounds either way is not going to make a difference in
getting approval. Co-morbidities are just that.....co-morbidities! Five
pounds will not make them or take them away. Good Luck!

You didn't mention what your BMI is 40 and above usually will take care of
it. Just say you are 1/2 - 1 ' shorter than you are. You never know as
adults sometimes we shrink and we don't go around measuring ourselfs.

I was considered a lightweight for my insurance so when I weigthed in I
would put change(coins) in my pocket's and bra to add weigth. The day of
surgery I only had a hospital gown on and thank god I was 101 lb. over my
ideal weight.

Your local dive shop will have flexible 1 lb, 2 lb, and 5 lb. weights that
are supposed to be used in a dive belt to keep you down under water. A 1
lb. weight in each bra cup and a 2 lb weight in each pants pocket will do
you nicely!!
Also, didn't you shrink a half inch recently???? Good luck!

I too had to gain weight to qualify. I ate everything all the time to gain
the last 10 lbs. Salty food will help you retain water and I would pack on
the clothes, jeans and heavy sweater and sweatshirt and jewelry. I would
not let 5lbs. hold me back. If you BMI is 40 then I wouldn't think the
last 5 lbs would matter. I had surgery April 25th and I am down 55 lbs.
Remember lightweights do not loose as rapidly as everyone else, Good Luck.
