Question:
This may sound silly...Does your belly
I know this sounds silly but I am pre-op and was wondering how you know you are hungry post-op? Is it the same as pre-op? Mine growls all the time now. If it does post-op is it different? — [Deactivated Member] (posted on August 15, 2002)

That is an excellent question! Yes, it does still growl. I didn't realize
that it would, and the first time mine growled I called my surgeons office
concerned something was wrong...lol. For me, it feels exactly the same as
it did preop. Other folks I've talked to say it feels different. But for me
it growls, I feel hungry and I eat to get rid of it (or try to ignore it).
I'll be curious to see what other posties say about this. Good luck! -Kim

Mine doesn't exactly "growl" (ie make noises), but it does let me
know when I'm hungry. It gurgled for the first few weeks after surgery...
which is normal, but now, no noises!

Hunger is hunger. You will know when you are hungry. Although in the first
couple of months you'll be hungry and yet not want to eat.

When I am hungry, my "stomach" hurts and aches. Actually it gets
real achy. I don't know why this happens. After I eat, I feel fine.

I did have the gurgling for the first few months after surgery. Seemed
worse when I tried something for the first time (how did it know???). Once
that went away, I haven't heard a peep. I do know when I need to eat but it
is NOT the same as pre op. I would have to say that is my most favorite
thing about post op life! =) I used to feel so desperate when I didn't get
something to eat. Now I know I am hungry and need to eat but it is somehow
not the same. I try not to go too long without eating because I get
headachey and just feel bad (sometimes hypoglycemic, too) if I don't eat
for a long time. But that ravenous feeling is GONE, BABY, GONE!

Hi Angela...it was about 6 or 7 weeks before I felt hunger. I was too busy
feeling nausea! But then, the hunger came back. But it's not like a
ravenous hunger...it's more of a brain thing like, Oh, I'm feeling hunger
now...and then I look at the clock and realize it's been 4-5 hours since I
last ate anything. My stomach doesn't make growling noises when it's
empty...it makes them though sometimes while I'm eating. Hugs, Joy

It's different for me since surgery. I "feel" hungry but my
tummy doesn't growl. However, it does make strange gurgling noises when I
first start to eat, but not every time I eat. It's like there's a little
alien living in there! [Tomorrow I will be 15 weeks post-op, open RNY.]

I am six months post-op and haven't experienced the growling yet. I do
feel hunger, usually 4 or so hours after eating, but sometimes within 2
hours. But just as Cheri Stewart said, it is a different type of hunger-no
more RAVENOUS feed me now or I'll die type of hunger. Its the type of
hunger that if I didn't eat, I know I wouldn't "die", if you know
what I mean. Early on, I had to really think when I thought I was
hungry-was I really hungry or was it just head hunger (psychological
wanting).

My stomach makes all sorts of noises whether it's hunger or not!! I've
found that when I'm truly hungry, I get a chest pain on the right side of
chest that feels like an elephant is standing on me. That's when I RUN (do
not walk) and get some food in me immediately and the pain goes away. If I
wait, then I start to feel very sick (nausea and the severe chest pain).
