Question:
I am allergic to aspertame, nutrasweet and saccrine..

and am strongly considering surgery. Are there any artificial sweeteners out there that would be safe for me to use post-op? Is fructose ok to use?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on August 10, 2002)

Hi! I suppose Splenda might be okay for you to use, it's made of "sucralose," which is derived from sugar...but I'd check with your doctor to know for sure. Also -- I think it's important to remember that not ALL people have intolerance to sugar. I had surgery 2 months ago, and I'm not having any trouble with sugar, to my great surprise. Of course, at the time I was considering surgery I didn't know that would happen that way - but I'm awfully glad it did, because I don't have to be manic about watching my sugar intake. Good luck!

I have been a diabetic and have used Splenda for over 2 years now...MUCH better than the others because it's natural. My WLS Support Group recommends that or Turbinato (or Turbinado) which is also found in the sugar section. I'm planning on staying with SPlenda, especially since you find more and more products made with it.

I would try Splenda. I was diabetic(type 2) before the surgery and now am normal and tolerate regular sugar well, and it no longer makes my blood sugar go up. I too don't have the dumping syndrome. All people are affected differently. Wish you the best of luck! Stacey

Angela, in addition to Splenda, there is also Stevia. It is an herbal sweetener (10x sweeter than sugar). You can find it at the healthfood store. I do recommend the liquid if you try it, the powder form is bitter.

I am allergic to all of that stuff too. I get migrains that are set off by those products. I am able to use splenda with out any problems. I actually think it tastes better too. Go out and get some Fruit 2O, it is sweetened with splenda. Drink a bottle or two and see how you react. You may want to check with your doc before you do this tho, depending on the type of reaction you have!
