Question:
Does anyone else get pain and discomfort from carbonation?
I am almost 10 weeks post op lap rny. I have cravings every now and then for a soda. I have tried to drink caff free diet sodas and the carbonation almost kills me. I have read many times on here about those who still like the occasional diet pepsi or coke. I was wondering if this will ever pass, and did everyone have this problem with carbonation at first too. I was just curious if this will be an all the time thing for me or if it will eventually go away. Either way it's not a big deal to me, but I was interested if it was normal or if I'm a rare one :) Thanks in advance. — Jeannette P. (posted on June 24, 2002)

At almost 9 mos post op, carbonation is still annoying. I dont drink soda
all that often, but when I do it makes me feel like a baloon.

I drink caffeine free diet coke daily. I have since February and at that
time I was 3 months post op. I've not had any problems with pop. However,
I don't drink nearly as much as I used too.

I was told by my doctor to not drink pop- it will stretch your pouch.
Making you more likely to gain the weight back. caffiene is bad,but so is
the carbonation.

Hi Jeanette, Luckily I am not a big pop drinker. Once I drank carbonated
water with kiwi flavor and I thought I would explode. I am 11 months
post-op and will have an occasional sip or two of carbonated beverage.
Anymore than that bothers me tremendously. My surgeon said pop is a
"no-no". Some surgeons allow it. Hope this is helpful! My problem
is drinking coffee. I am going to post a question about it. Good luck on
your continued weightloss.

I was told never to drink carbonated beverages :( I am only 3 weeks
post-op LAP RNY so I haven't tried it yet. But the docs and nutritionist
basically said i can only have carbonation on my wedding day drinking
champagne, which is pretty drastic. LOL but they seemed serious! But I know
many people dilute it with ice and it can be ok for them. but i have heard
it can stretch the pouch. I was a huge COKE drinker before, so i get big
cravings for soda, so i hope it goes away for you! :)

I can't drink it either, even a sip makes me feel like my stomach is going
to explode! A funny story - A couple of months ago I planned an evening of
romance for my husband and I. I made a romantic candle-lit dinner. For a
"Festive drink" I bought some sparkling apple cider that looks
like a bottle of champagne. (we call it Baptist champagne and have drunk it
for years on special occasions). In my mind I was thinking
"juice" not soda or champagne. We clinked glasses and I took a
big swig. Talk about the feeling of about to explode! I felt like there was
an atomic bomb in my pouch. Several big, loud, very unsexy burps later I
was fine. Good thing my husband has a great sense of humor, the rest of our
romantic evening was wonderful!

I can't tolerate more than a sip of carbonated drinks either. My doctor
told me not to drink any of them! So....now I just let the carbonated
drinks go flat and THEN I drink them. Better than nothing!
