Hi Debby. Be sure to check with your doctor first, but let me tell you
about the pre op diet that my surgeon puts her patients on. It's a high
protein diet consisting of cottage cheese, tuna fish and protein drinks.
Find a protein drink you like (www.vitalady.com is a great place to get
samples), have a protein drink three times a day, for breakfast, lunch and
dinner. When you get hungry in between them, eat as much lowfat cottage
cheese, or solid water packed tuna as you like.. the catch.. you can't add
ANYTHING to the cottage cheese or tuna that will add FATS, SUGAR or CARBS.
(I used to add fat free Italian dressing to my tuna) Up your water intake
to a minimum of 80 ounces a day, and get in as much walking as you can.
Modify the 'diet' as it suits, if you don't care for tuna, or can't stomach
cottage cheese, find alternate high protein lowfat sources. I know people
who have lost upwards of 40lbs before surgery by following it, and again,
please check with your doctor before trying anything this dramatic to get
the weight off. I wish you the very best and much success, no matter what
route you decide to use.
~Peace

seems sort of silly to me, you are not someone who is over 500 lbs. and the
equipment won't hold you, and if losing 50 lbs. was so easy, you wouldn't
be seeking the surgery. Maybe you should get another opinion from a second
doctor.

I would find another doctor. If you could lose fifty pounds on your own
you wouldn't need the surgery. My doctor has performed this operation on
people over 500lbs and never requested any more that a low calorie diet
five days prior to the surgery to reduce fat on the liver.

THIS IS A LITTLE RIDICULOUS! MY DOC TOLD ME THAT THEY LIKE YOU TO
"TRY" TO LOSE 10LBS BEFORE SURGERY. I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH
GETTING YOURSELF INTO SHAPE BEFORE YOU HAVE SURGERY. YOU NEED TO HAVE A
TALK WITH YOUR DOC. MAYBE YOU COULD MEET HALF WAY OR SOMETHING. GEEZ - TO
LOSE 50LBS IS ALOT. I JOINED A WEIGHT LOSS GROUP LAST YEAR AND LOST 50LBS.
IT TOOK ME 6 MONTHS WHICH THEY CONSIDERED VERY FAST. MY SON AND I WERE BIKE
RIDING, WALKING AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT I COULD THINK OF. I PRACTICALLY
STARVED MYSELF. IT WAS A VERY UNHEALTHY WAY TO DO IT AND I REALLY REGRET IT
BECAUSE I GAINED IT ALL BACK + MORE IN A SHORT TIME. LET YOUR DOC KNOW THAT
IF YOU COULD ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING LIKE THAT YOU WOULDN'T NEED SURGERY!!!!
PLEASE DON'T MAKE YOURSELF SICK TO MAKE THE DOCTOR HAPPY!!!FIND A NEW
DOCTOR THAT CAN UNDERSTAND PEOPLE LIKE US!!!! GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE OF
YOURSELF!!!!!!!

I agree with the rest of the posts, we wouldn't be going through this
process if losing 50 lbs were so easy. My Dr. wants me on a liquid diet 1
week prior to surgery and I thought that was bad. My brother had the Open
RNY done about a year ago and his Dr. had him lose 10% of his weight prior
to surgery (supposedly it shrinks the liver so it is easier for them to
work in there), his Dr. cancels surgery for those that can't comply. My
Dr. said that they do that simply to find out who is serious about the
procedure. Talk to your Dr. and find out his reasoning for the 50 lbs. and
then decide for yourself whether you will continue with him/her or find a
new surgeon. Good Luck!

I agree with the other posts. If you could lose 50 pounds before surgery
you could keep loosing more and not need the surgery. Did you ask your
doctor why 50? I could see maybe 10-15 but 50?

You don't say which type of surgery is being performed but if it's a LAP
procedure, they may want you to lose the weight so that it can be more
easily done. People over a certain BMI cannot have the LAP done and must
have it done open. Good luck!

That doesn't make much since to me at all. I weigh 408 and I am 5'9 - BMI
of something like 62. My surgeon has performed LAP on ppl with BMI of a
72!! I would talk to my surgeon and explain to him/her that you will try
to eat better, etc. Ask if you don't lose the 50 LBS will he/she not
perform the surgery. If so, there are more and more doctors out there that
will. My surgery date is July 10th and I can't wait! Best of luck!!

50 lbs?!?!? My doc wants me to lose 30 lbs and I thought that was bad. I
would go back and see if maybe he can lower that to 30 lbs atleast. I was
angry was I was told to lose 10% but after research and seeing why doctors
do this, I totally respect that. Its to make sure you have a safer surgery
as well as get you in the right mind state. I know my nutritionist has me
on the protein sparing diet to lose this weight. So maybe you should look
into that. Best of luck to you. If you have any questions email me.

Debbie, Maybe your doctor your told you 50#'s so that you would try to lose
as much as possible. I doubt very seriously if your doctor would NOT do
your surgery because you didn't lose a whole 50, but if you lost 25#'s that
would be great. Just get busy trying to lose all you can, I'm sure your
doctor will give you bonus points for every pound you lose! And hey, you
might get so pumped trying to lose 50#'s that you might lose more and be
well on your way to being a big LOSER!! Good luck!!
