Question:
I couldn't stand the full liquid stage so I skipped it...

I couldn't stand the full liquid stage so I skipped it and went directly to pureed/ soft food in which I am doing great on. This is against my Dr.'s diet but I didn't like the protien shakes and I couldn't stand being on liquids for another 2 weeks. I haven't eaten anything I'm not supposed to, I just skipped a phase. Do you think this will hurt me weight loss or pouch?    — KCAllen77 (posted on June 1, 2002)

You need to stay on that special diet while your body is healing. Your working the body to hard you want to heal properly. Please follow your doctors advice so you don't hurt yourself.

Every doctor is different. Mine did not require a liquid diet. I was already on pureed while in the hospital.

Hi Keesha -- I did the exact same thing. I was supposed to be on CLEAR liquids for over two weeks. After one week, I couldn't stand it anymore. So I moved on to soft foods. I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't known that so many surgeons REQUIRE their patients to eat food before they will release from the hospital. Logically, those doctors would not intentionally harm their patients. So I took it slow and easy, and I've been just fine. So has my weight loss (-22 pounds in 15 days)! Good luck!

Hi Keesha..I did the SAME thing and I know almost everyone does!!.I wasnt feeling NORMAL just drinking clear liquids so I started with a few soft foods ( like adding crackers t my soups) and did very well with them.I just made sure that before the food reached my Tummy that I had chewed it up very very well before swallowing..I have lost 28 lbs in three weeks..Just be careful and enjoy NO tuff foods yet.;)

I left the hospital on pureed foods. I don't think it will harm you, but maybe ask your surgeon WHY he wants you to follow a partiular regimen. Maybe he does things a little differently from other surgeons. Good luck.

I couldn't resist answering this one!!! Looks like there's a definite trend here, but ME TOO!!! I couldn't stand the liquid diet so about 4-5 days after surgery, I did one day of pureed and went straight to the soft foods. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and have lost 25 lbs and my surgeon says i'm doing great. I haven't overeaten or vomitted once. Just be sure to chew very carefully and for a looooong time and you should be fine. Hope this helps!!!

I know a lot of people have a very difficult time with this stage and it is very easy to feel you can skip steps. Most physicians require the liquid phase to help your stomach and intestines to heal. Foods with more substance to them can be very irritating to th new pouch and intestine and can cause some internal bleeding and or ulcers. I have almost 4 months out and I know where you are coming from...but please, please try to stick it out. There are some really bad tasting protein supplements out there, but if you contact me I can hook you up with some really awesome tasting protein shakes and protein drinks. I feel like I am eating something I shouldn't (but I'm not) they are so good. I wish you luck on your journey!

I am releived to know I'm not the only one. I haven't gotten sick yet either by skipping the full liquids, I actually feel alot better on this stage of the diet.

I am one of those that the surgeon requires you to eat before being discharged. Everyone does great on this plan. And I never pureed a thing. I did eat softer foods though. Some things I ate in the beginning were cottage cheese, yogurt, peanut butter on crackers, refried beans, mashed potatoes, canned 'chicken of the sea' on a cracker and other things like jello and popcicles. My nutritionist even gave me the 'ok' to try bits of turkey at Thanksgiving when I was 2 1/2 weeks out. Keep in mind that there may be a reason for the different stages of diets that surgeons recommend, but they also may be erring on the safe side. In my opinion I think they are being overly-cautious, but they just want the best for their patients. Just try to take it easy on your new stomach so that it can heal properly.

Hi Keesha! I'm four weeks post-op and 26 pounds down. I was eating soft foods at five days. I went for my 10 day appointment and told my doctor and he said, "eat anything you want - it's all trial and error". I'm not saying I ate prime rib and a baked potatoe, but if my family was having chicken, I cut up chicken and ate it. I've been eating everything I used to eat (about a tenth of the quantity) and I'm great! I even returned to work this week full time and feel wonderful! You know your body - test your limits... Sometimes people on this website tend to get a little hyper about things... Good luck!

I was eating puree as soon as I got home from the hospital on day 4/5. The full liquids made me really ill. No side effects; no problems. I felt 300% better as soon as I got some real food in my stomach. I did puree type foods for a few days, and then I was eating soft regular food. My doctor said to be careful and just eat what I could tolerate, basically.

My doctor's plan didn't even include a "full liquids" stage. I went from clear liquids to soft foods with nothing in between, and I'm doing fine (down 180 lbs.!)

I also never had a liquid stage at all. Nothing for the first 3 or 4 days in the hospital - NOTHING, but ice chips, can you imagine? But, anyway, once the fever finally broke, they gave me a lquid meal and then since I was okay with that, my next meal was pureed. I stayed that way for a while and at my two week check up, I was allowed to add dry toast, crackers, and pasta. I am down 78 pounds at 3.5 months, and have never once vomitted or dumped, so I wouldn't say you are going to harm your puch or mess up your weight loss. Just be careful and take it easy! Our pouches are tender at first. You should be fine. Take care, Paula :)
