They said that 800 number does not talk to the insured but has anyone ever tried successfully to get them to talk to you? I just want to know if they got the letter (package) from my surgeon that makes my case for a bypass. — Amy G. (posted on April 24, 2002)

They cut off my question for the subject line. It said, I was just given

I work for a mojor ins. company. And no, the people at the 'secret
provider number' are not supposed to speak to you. However, they can and
will, if you call 3-way with your doc on the line!!!! Try that, it may
work.

And actually, those people are not going to be able to give you that answer
either. You need to reach the department that actually makes the
approvals. The provider relations people, never receive this paperwork.
But the provider relations and customer relations people should be able to
tell you the name of the department that handles this. You will probably
get a more accurate answer from the provider line tho. And like I said
before, you must have someone from your providers office on the phone with
you when you call, it doesnt have to be the surgeon himself.
