Question:
How often do you have a BM post-op?
I've read a million posts that deal with constipation, but I'm trying to find out what is considered the 'normal' amount of time (# of days) between having a BM? When is too long? — missesrita (posted on April 17, 2002)

At first, according to the little book my surgeon gave me, you will
probably only have a bowel movement once every 2 to 3 days. This was the
case with me up thru about 3.5 to 4 months post-op. Now, it occurs at
least every other day and sometimes every day, depending on what I ate the
day before. If you have gone more then 3 days without one, you should
probably ask your doctor. A stool softener may be recommended. I did get
constipated pretty regularly at first and I found that watered down apple
juice usually helped and just getting in as much water every day as
possible.

At first it was every 3-4 days, but now (2 1/2 months post op) it is
usually every day.

Also, I had discomfort due to constipation caused by prescription -
hydrocodone - and took milk of magnesia to help with that. My surgeon told
me that hydrocodone will cause constipation.
