Question:
5 months post-op, my back is killing me.......
I'm 5 months out and down 90 lbs. All of sudden my back has been hurting......a lot, mostly when I sit for very long. My lower back mostly. I remember when I lost a significant amount of weight before this becoming an issue. Anyone else experiencing this? — Robin O. (posted on February 12, 2002)

I just saw my PCP for this today.....The way he explained it was - I have
lost a substantial about of weight (104#s - 8 1/2 months post op) and am
now more mobil...which is affecting two areas in the hip joints (don't
remember what he called it)...these two areas are for bending forward and
back...but with the increased mobility I am twisting and turning
also....and hence the discomfort. He is going to recommend physical
therapy, but I have to wait until I recover from my hernia repair
tomorrow...My PCP explained that the purpose of physical therapy is so that
I learn how to reposture again at a new build. I hope this make sense....I
have the worse problem at night....I lay on one side and then it hurts so I
am constantly turning over....Good Luck!! Remember, nothing replaces your
own Doctor's diagnois...what is wrong with me could be way far from your
problem....I just thought I would share what my Doctor said!

Thanks so much for asking this! I was afraid I was having a kidney stone
again, but maybe this is just weight related! I hadn't thought about that.

I'm almost 5 months out and down 107 lbs and was having similar troubles a
few weeks ago. My PCP said of course you are, the strains on your spine are
all different now, and he immediately wrote me a referral to a chiropractor
that I've used in the past. I feel much better already, so I think he was
right. I think our bodies do a lot of shifting around which such big weight
changes, especially since most of us go from pretty sedentary to very
active when we pick it up at the gym.

I too am having a lot of back problems. I am 6 mon post op have had
physical therapy, epidural injections, now an MRI my back is so bad I
almost cry. Am on oxocodone for the pain reading this makes me wonder if
the weight lose might be what is wrong. I was 295/210.

I've seen posts on here of many people who have gone thru similar things
from back to hip joints to feet and ankles, etc. I had a problem with pain
in the hip joints but saw all the posts on here so waited patiently and in
about a month to two months, it cleared up never to return. Sometimes at
almost two years out, I still find myself walking with my old protective
"stoop" though and have to mentally remind myself to stand up
tall and pull my tummy in...my back and legs aren't going to start hurting
anymore.
