Question:
Do any of you post-ops take prescription meds for reflux?

What meds do you take? I'm post-op open RNY, almost 3 months out. For the past 2 weeks, I've noticed discomfort in the sternal area that I think is reflux. I was diagnosed with GERD pre-op and was taking Zantac twice a day. This discomfort that I'm feeling does not seem to be the same as before surgery. I haven't taken any Zantac post-op. I have tried Tums/Rolaids on a few occasions, but they do not seem to help. I recently had an EKG so I know that this is not a problem with my heart. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.    — Paulette W. (posted on February 5, 2002)

Hi! I was diagnosed with pretty significant GERD back in 1993. Since my open RNY, I take prescription Prevacid daily to control stomach acids. I would check with your doc since you do have a history of GERD. Its better to be safe than sorry. Good luck! AMY

I was diagnosed with multiple ulcers and GERD two weeks before my surgery. I have been on protonix twice daily since that time.

I will be 2 yrs post op in May. I had a problem with a pressure type feeling early post op and a hard time drinking water , it felt like razor blades going down. I was on liquid tagament at the time . My doctor changed me to pepcid tablets 2x a day morning and night. I have not had a problem since. I still take it and probably will forever. I had a "pre ulcer" condition post op.

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gerd/ Water going down like razerblades.................... I'm 2 1/2 years post op and recently slammed with what appears to be GERD. Not looking forward to fixing the hernia. Maybe it can't be avoided. Lost 240 and got a new life. Jumped out of airplanes and now can ski like a badass. I also found that I can effectively clear a very full room/bar with my gasses. I have to say the good far out weighs the bad. I hope things don't get worse.
