Question:
Can a protein drink make you dump at 4 weeks post op?

Has anyone else had this happen before? I'll be 4 weeks post-op in 2 days and have been drinking the same protein drink (designer whey from GNC with non-fat milk) for breakfast since I was 1 week post-op, but for some reason I think it made me "dump" this morning. I got dizzy and a little sick to my stomach and had to lay down for a while. I just thought if I was going to dump from something it would have happened the first time I tried it. Any suggestions? I am having issues at 6 weeks Postop. I can eat something a few times, and it will go down fine, and then all of a sudden I am throwing up the next time I eat it. Needless to say I have not found the one "safe" food.

I have had the same thing happen to me with many things. I have also found that when I start to dump I can take two tums and I start to feel better right away. Wish I had found that out earlier because I do not like to dump.

I'm almost 6 months out and still have to be careful. What I have eaten before doesnt always sit well the next time. I am lactose intolerant and very sensitive to natural sugars, carbs and fats. If I eat carbs first I'll dump but I can eat my protein and finish with some carbs and do fine. I can eat a small amount of fruit after consuming tons of protein but one grape alone is enough to make me think I'm dying-major dump. Like I said, I'm still learning how to eat and what combinations I can tolerate. I find a food diary still very helpful, it also keeps me keep my protein and fluids up. By any chance did you happen to grab a higher grade milk then skim nonfat, because milk also has sugars in it. Depending on how sensitive you are to sugars the milk sugar could make you dump------------------ good luck----- Helen

I had the same thing happen to me around the same time as you. I asked my surgeon about it, and he said, "yeah, sometimes protein shakes'll make you dump". Thanks a lot for that bit of information! Anyway, I asked the good people on this board about it and I got some interesting responses. Most folks thought it was a sign of lactose intolerance, but I'd even dump on the Extreme Pure Pro Grape (koolaid-like protein drink). Since I was committed to getting in my protein, come hell or high water, I just started out as slowly as possible. I made certain to put lots of water in each drink, so as to dilute the protein rush, and drink slowly (through a straw -- my doc ok'd it). I didn't always get all of the drink down in the recommended 30 minutes, so I threw the rest away, but I worked at it. Keep trying your best. Slip slowly, and once you get that icky feeling, stop for a bit and see if it passes. Then try to sip slowly again. Maybe it's something in your body building up tolerance to the protein or something, but this approach eventually worked for me. Best of luck to you!
