Question:
I'm almost 5 months post op and still not able to keep much down.

I'm having so much trouble with food........Broth, Jello and the kids of stuff we were to eat the first two weeks after surgery still won't stay down. The only good thing is i have lost 106#'s. But i'm so sick all the time. I drink as much as i can but even water gives me sick feeling. I'm also having problems keeping my meds down because when i take them i right away start getting sick. Will this ever go away? Thanks to anyone with advice.    — Nancy K. (posted on December 7, 2001)

Nancy, does your Doctor know this? If not, you need to tell him. You should be able to keep foods down and not feel sick after 5 months. You could have an obstruction. If your Doctor does know and doesn't seem concerned maybe you should consider finding a new Doctor! I am one month post-op and feel great and am down 40 pounds. I have not had any major problems with food, only if I eat too fast or don't chew well enough and I have been able to eat whatever I want. I do stay away from anything with sugar in it, bread, corn, peas, pasta or rice and no red meat, pop or alcholic beverage. I hope you resolve this problem soon and start feeling better. Good luck.

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make after having this surgery is accepting getting sick and vomiting when eating. We tell ourselves we're not ready for the food, we're not chewing enough or we're eating too fast. But at 5 months out you definitely should be used to how to eat by now. And getting sick daily isn't normal, and can develop into a new bad relationship with food. It sounds to me like you could have a stricture and need an endoscopic dilation. I have had two of these, and they are a wonderful procedure!! I went through some depressing times when I was losing weight, but I couldn't enjoy the little I was eating. Everything came back up. Then I had this procedure, and it was almost like a miracle. Feel free to read my experience on my profile. I will tell you that a stricture is NOTHING to worry about getting taken care of. It's easy as pie to get the procedure done..and no pain. Best of luck to you.
