Question:
Has anyone ever been denied or postponed because of results?
Has anyone ever been denied or had their surgery postponed due the results from their psych eval or MMPI? For some reason, this is REALLY bothering me! Please put me at ease! — Jacque P. (posted on November 29, 2001)

Hi there, I'm still preop and I had my psych eval recently. I am out of
state, so I first called my prospective surgeon's regular psychologist to
see what he suggested I do. We actually chit-chatted quite a bit and I
told him about this site and how so many people are tremendously stressed
and afraid of the psych eval. He said that they mostly look for people
with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder, but that he had
very rarely seen anyone denied because of their psych eval. My surgeon
requires it before he will consider you as a kind of insurance that you are
prepared to deal with post-op life and that you won't become depressed,
stop taking care of yourself, and get ill. As far as the MMPI (Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory) is concerned, that is nothing to worry
about. As the name implies, it's just a personality inventory (Are you
depressed? Do you ever think about killing yourself? Do you like small
furry animals? lol). Honestly, it is very easy to BS this test (even the
psychologist admitted it), so even if you're a mental case, if your smart,
you can answer your way around it. I don't think that's a good idea
though... it is for your benefit as well. So really, if you know you're a
pretty normal person, have peace, you will do just fine :)

JUST RECENTLY I MET SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN PUT ON HOLD FOR 8 WEEKS WHILE THEY
TREAT HER FOR DEPRESSION. SHE MUST ATTEND GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL CLASSES.
SHE IS NOT HAPPY WITH THESE RESULTS.

Surgery may be denied or postponed if the psych eval shows an eating
disorder, borderline personality disorder, bi-polar disorder, or any other
uncontrolled psychiatric diagnoses, or unreasonable expectations. Also if
the psychaitrist has reason to believe the peron can't handle the post-op
diet.

i just returned from my eval results and they told me the freakin MMPI said
i was still too depressed for the surgery and i had to wait 3 more
months..they were goin by the results olf the MMPI which said i was still
too depressed but when i took it it said to answer how i have felt last 6
mnths or so NOT how i feel today so obviously they misread it..so anyway i
was told im entitled to a second opionion so i called a different person to
do the eval and retake the test..
