Question:
I am experiencing really big hiccups.
My doctor seemed surprise, suggested using a straw when I drink. But sometimes they come out of the middle of nowhere, even if I am not eating or drinking. And I don't mean little hiccups, these are huge! Any ideas?? — Rachel F. (posted on November 12, 2001)

I'm glad you posted this question. I too got the hiccups and continue to
do so...A LOT! At no specific times, but more at night. I took some
advise from another and try to burp. It really seems to help. Good luck

Thank god, i'm not the only one. I obviously don't get them as frequently
as you, but when i get them, they seem to last forever and they are a
little more painful than pre-op. I used to get them when I drank soda
(since i physically can't burp) and when I would run out of air and try to
drink or talk. Now, I get them out of the blue. No soda, no water, no
food and they don't go away by holding my breath. After about an hour,
they mysteriously disappear. Strange huh? I personally would think that
our body is just adjusting. ?? :0)

The way to stop someone from hiccupping is to offer them money if they can
do it--hiccup--again. Show them the money! It even worked on the person who
told me this trick in the first place - my psychiatrist.

I get the hiccups when I'm "overly" full. I think it's my body's
way to tell me it's full and can't take no more. They don't last long, but
it does hurt.
