Question:
How long did you wait to eat salad?
I am craving salad like you wouldn't believe. How long should I wait? I experimenting with a lot of food right now and not having that many problems, as long as I stay away from my water. Did anyone have any side affects from lettuce or salad in general? — Robin O. (posted on September 26, 2001)

Ummm, I love salad, before and after. I had it at less than a month out,
after being allowed to go to solid foods. Just a bit at first. Almost
always order at restaurants, cause the salads they give you are so huge no
human could finish them, so when you don't no one notices. I put lots of
protein on my salad (fav? : toasted pecans, blue cheese/gorgonzola, dried
cranberries/cherries/mandarin oranges and a little basalmic vinagrette,
chicken, hardboiled egg whites, too) I find I can eat a lot of it, think
how much lettuce you can smash in a cup. Chew well (I used crispy lettuces
at first, butterhead, romaine heart and iceberg). Its hard to eat little
bites of salad, so be careful. I eat lots of salad also becuase I need the
roughage. Bad.

I haven't had a single salad in the 13 months since my surgery and I
haven't missed it at all. I do pick the cheese, eggs and croutons off my
husband's salad whenever he has one though. My thoughts on salads are I
only have a small amount of space in my pouch, I'm not going to waste it on
lettuce! But if you want one and think you can tolerate it go for it.

Its so funny I craved it too. When I finally had it at 4 weeks it didnt
really taste that great for some reason. I guess its because you need to
chew your food soooo well that it was not the same as before. Also,
protein is really the way to go. You need to get between 50-70g a day so
filling up on salad isnt really a wise choice. However, enjoy it but try
to add proteins to it. Enjoy!

Following my RNY, my surgeon allowed plain lettuce and tomato salads at 3
weeks, and stated that I could add all other "salad items" at 6
weeks post-op. My first salad was the BEST thing I had ever eaten, and 18
months later it's still the best!! I never had any trouble tolerating
salad, but everyone is different. Good luck!

Hi, I'm 7 weeks post op and can't keep salad down. Even if I chew it to
death it comes right back up. Which is kinda of a bummer since I love
salad. :(

I am 3 weeks post op and I started salads a few days ago. I have had no
problem. It tastes so good. I just cut up everything really small and
chew really well. I use lettuce, tomato, cucumber, shredded colby cheese
and I toss in about 5 or 6 kidney beans. I used a little italian dressing.
I have eaten this about 6 times now and digested just fine

I ate my first lettuce at about 6 weeks out. It was an accident (came on a
soft chicken taco that I ordered with only meat and cheese--of course they
put everything on it!). I was sure it would make me sick, but it didn't.
One of my favorite meals is the chicken caesar from La Madeline. It has
enough chicken for two meals and the romaine lettuce has lots of vitamins.
Salads are OK as long as you pile them with proteins and don't fill up on
the leafy stuff!
