Question:
Eating meat has given me trouble. Our plan allows on week 8.
I'm 9 weeks out, but every time I try meat I throw up. My doctor told me that it may be a little early for meat for me personally, even though most of the group is okay. Is there anyone out there that had to wait awhile before eating meat? How long before you could tolerate? The doctor said it may be even 4 months! I'll be milk and cheese'd out by then! Thanks in advance. — Tracy L. (posted on August 16, 2001)

My surgery was June 20. Meat gives me the most difficult digestion. Now I
keep cooked and ready to use: fish, gr. beef, steak. For the steak, I use
my processor. I can tolerate small amounts of barbecue sauce & steak
sauce. Fish is my favorite now and was my least favorite pre-op! It flakes
and digests easily for me. Good Luck!

Tracy - I am 11 weeks post op and can NOT do most meats. What I can do is
fresh swordfish or tuna steaks grilled (can't do frozen fish in any form or
canned tuna)...I can also do a few bites of grilled sirloin - but nothing
else sits well. Not lean lunch meats, chicken, ground beef..etc!! I at
times am envious of those who are early post op that can eat a taco from
taco bell...tried it & can't do them...lol!! Because most proteins
(including cheese) give me such problems, I am loosing pretty slow - or at
least it feels slow, I won't weigh in until next tuesday!! Good
Luck....try little bits at a time and go back to it every couple of days or
a week...our taste are continuely changing.

I've found that I can eat a LITTLE chicken (maybe 1oz or less) if it is
moist--i.e. marinated or dipped in a sauce. Have you tried baked tofu?
You can get it in all sorts of flavors and it takes on the flavor of
whatever you put on it--i.e. teriyaki, italian seasonings, lemon pepper,
etc. I've also found that shrimp go down well and I've been able to do
ground turkey. I have not yet attempted beef.

I am 7 months post-op and still can't tolerate beef. It just sits there in
my stomach. I've only been able to eat ground beef and chicken for a few
months without getting really full or really ill. I've heard it may take 6
months or even a year before you can have a nice piece of steak.

Everyone reacts differently. I'm three years post-op and I still
can't eat steak or roast beef. I can eat ground beef, but I rarely
bother. I couldn't eat poultry for about eight months. It really
wasn't a problem because there was no real need to eath beef and
chicken. Fish an eggs were better sources of protein anyway. Don't
push it. Listen to your body.
