Question:
Since my surgery 6/18/01 I am always cold, whereas I used to always be hot.
I thought that the extra weight that I carry was keeping me hot. It's been a little over a month and I've lost 50 pounds, but this is nowhere near enough to make me "skinny" enough that I shouldn't still be hot. Does anyone else have this problem, or does anyone understand it? I guess it's not the end of the world, but its inexplicable to me. Thanks. — Tracy L. (posted on August 2, 2001)

Hi! I had my surgery May 31 2001 and I am having the same problem.I was
allways hot before and now I'm cold.I figured it was because I lost some
of my insulation (fat).I hope thats the only problem I have cause I can all
ways put on another sweater! I have lost 58# in two months and have been
doing well.I wish you luck too!!

That happened to be also. My surgeon said that it is quite common.
We lose so much body fat so quickly that it takes our bodies time to
adjust to the change. I'm in Boston...after my rny, the winters were
particulary bad and I couldn't stand to be in an air conditioned room
in the summer. I'd give up wearing skirts because my legs were always
freezing. I'm three years post-op and I'm much, much better now.

Hi - Open RNY May 29, 2001 - down 45#s and YES....The a/c always seems a
tab bit cold...my tolerance is not
as high. However, I hated being hot so this is a nice chance!!!

I had my open rny in Dec/2000 and thought I would freeze to death, it must
just be a reaction to the surgery, I was the one who was always the
hottest, now I am the last one to get hot..can't figure. I am not freezing
anymore but I wonder what the winter will bring.

I had my surgery on June 6, 2001 and I am the same way I use to be so hot.
My ceiling fan in my bedroom never has been off but now I freeze
everywhere. I'm snuggled under the covers and my husband is on top of the
covers sweating. One good thing now I can wear all my long sleeve suits to
work or church and I'm comfortable where before I could not wear them for
getting to hot. God Bless You. Regina

I really had a hard time with being cold this past winter (I live in the
north anyway) I would wear my gloves in my office and my coat, with a
quilt
wrapped around me. I would get sharp pains in my legs from
being sooo cold. The only way I
could warm up was to take a very hot bath.
Now that it is summer and hot and humid I love it- I go outside to warm up
because of the AC in my office!
Before I couldn't handle any kind of heat- after loosing 90+
lbs the body temp has had me guessing- I much preffer it this
way then the other way :-) I can layer clothes and not worry
if I look fat. Take care...

As with every one else. I had surgery back in July of 2000. I was so hot
natured that even at work I would have the air going and the fan blowing
directly on me. Well now I have the heater going. I feel we really were
insulated with that extra weight. Enjoy. I am down 131 lbs in a years time
and stay cold. I can handle the
trade off.

I had open RNY on 7/11/2000 and have lost 132 pounds as of today. I freeze
all of the time! I live in Tennessee and the heat index here has been 105
this week. I sit at my desk shivering! Go figure! Last year I was so
comfortable in the office. When other people complained about how cold it was I told them I loved it. Now I
try to wear long sleeves. I'll take being cold over chubby any day!

My doctor explained this one to me! He said that our fat cells contain
something called Leptin and that during rapid weight loss, this is released
into our system. Leptin apparently inhibits our heat production, and so
during rapid weight loss, we are unable to produce heat for our bodies.
So, that's why we're cold...it isn't
JUST the loss of insulation. Neat, eh?

I am so glad you asked this question. I had open rny on 5-15-01 and freeze
all the time also. So it is not just you. I am glad to see that you got an
explaination. Thanks

You are all making me feel better. I am wearing sweaters in August.
People in my office think I'm nuts! I get so cold my hands turn white. I have lost 150
pounds. Does anyone know if it gets any better?

I had my surgery a week ago and I'M FREEZING !!! I always used to be
sweating and now I'm a darn lizard. I think I am going to go buy myself a
heat lamp to rest under. LOL. I am glad that there are others that
understand though. Warm thoughts to all.
