Question:
Has anyone had surgery at the Hershey Medical Center with Dr Robert Cooney?

I had gathered some information from his office back when I was deciding who to do my surgery. I didn't think that there was anything wrong with the dotor, just that it took a very long time to get in with him. I ended up having my surgery by Dr. Hoddinott out of Bethlehem, PA. He was excellent. Please e-mail me at [email protected] with any questions!

Hello! Yes Dr. Cooney did my open rny on June 18, 2001. He is absolutely fabulous. If you were ever to come to a support group meeting pre-surgery (which they suggest), Dr. Cooney is usually there, and you'll see many people fawning. I think most of us (women that is) develop a little crush on him. He is very knowledgeable and runs the program at Hershey. But is also super nice and caring. He just seems to make people feel comfortable. Basically, I would say he doesn't advocate the surgery, but he is a great supporter of it. I'd have to say he did a fabulous job on my surgery...no complications. As the other poster said, it does take a little time to get into see him as he is in high demand, but I certainly wouldn't let that discourage you from going to a great doctor! The only bad thing is, a 15 minute appointment could take you over an hour. You just have to accept the pace there, because it is a very busy teaching hospital of course. If you can't get in to see Dr. Cooney as early as you would like, you can always try Dr. Ku too. He is newer at this type of surgery, but I had to visit him post-op and found him very friendly and knowledgeable too. Basically I think the progam at Hershey is awesome. The nutritionists are the best too! Well, good luck with your decision. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

I forgot to add in my last post...regarding the length of time, I had my first appointment with the nutritionist (the first step in their program) on March 5. My surgery was June 18. Three months is not so bad! It gives you time to feel secure in your decision. In fact, they called me a week early to tell me there was a cancellation, would I like to go sooner? And I have to tell you, I needed that extra week!
