Question:
Surgery 1/16/01-What's the Pain like for Lap RYN..

I have had 2 kids but that is the only pain I've experienced in my life...I'm having Lap RYN and I was curious what the pain will be like the first week.    — Debora H. (posted on December 26, 2000)

Deborah, I had my lap 12/21/00. Today I went grocery shopping by myself. While you are in the hospital, they give you enough drugs to take care of your pain. After I got home, the only discomfort I have is a tightness where I'm stitched and at my drain. My hesterectomy was worse. Good luck to you, your surgery in on my birthday, I'll be thinking of you.

I just had my lap RNY on 12/11. The pain was tolerable. The first two days the morphine pump was my best friend, but afterward the pain was very manageable except for when I coughed. OUCH! I agree with the previous answer that the pain from my hysterectomy was probably considerably worse. Good luck with your surgery.

The first few days in the hospital my pain was managed by a Dilaudid drip that I could push every 6 minutes (for a very small amount) I was glad that I did not have morphine, it makes some people feel weird and have nightmares...and Dilaudid is actually stronger. I had no problems. After discharge my doctor gave me liquid Percocet (called Roxicet) and that was fine too and within only a couple days I really didn't need it much, usually only at bedtime. But after about 10 days I started experiencing sharp pain on my upper left side. Apparently lap patients sometimes have a problem with the muscle that runs from the rib area down over the stomach and I had been feeling so good that I probably over-did it with activity. My doctor assured me (after examining me) that I did not have a hernia and that this would pass. I just have to take it easy a little longer. Even with this the percocet is working fine for me. I also had 2 previous c-sections as my only reference for surgical pain. This seems a little worse than I remember those being but I think some of that is fear. I was terrified that I would have nausea or vomiting on top of the abdominal pain but luckily never did. All in all it was not that bad, pain has been managed, just allow plenty of time to let yourself heal without going too fast.

I agree that this is very individual, but in my case, I'd say it was more like discomfort than pain. A visit to my dental hygienist is more painful. It would be a real tragedy if someone didn't go through with the surgery because of their fear of potential pain.

WOW, FROM READING ALL THE POSTS ON THIS PAGE, IT SHOWS ME HOW DEFFINATELY EVERYONE REACTS TO EVERYTHING DIFFERENTLY. I AM 7 DAYS POST OP, AND HAD PLANS ON BEING BACK TO WORK BY NOW, (SINCE I DID NOT HAVA A LOT OF SICK TIME LEFT). BUT LET ME TELL YOU - THE PAIN THAT I AM HAVING ON THE LARGEST CUT OF THE FOUR INCISIONS THE ONE TO THE LEFT OF THE BELLY BUTTON - IS LIKE BEING STABBED BY A LARGE BUTCHER KNIVE EVERYTIME I MOVE. IT'S HOT, SEARING PAIN, IMPOSSIBLE TO OVERLOOK OR IGNORE. I TAKR 4 MG OF DILAUDID EVERY 4 HOURS AND IT DOES NOT TOUCH IT. I FOUND ANOTHER POST REFERRING TO THE SAME PAIN TITLE "BELLY BUTTON PAIN". iT SENT ME TO THE EMERG ROOM, 5 DAYS POST OP. i JUST KNEW SOMETHIBG HAD TORN BUT NOPE - ALL TEST WERE NORMAL, NOT A THING WRONG. DRS SAID IT WAS JUST TRAUMA PAIN, SINCE THATS THE OPENING FROM WHERE EVERYTHING IS DONE - ALL THE INSTRUMENTS GO IN THERE AND ALL THE GUTS COME OUT OF THERE TOO. SO I HAVE SURRENDERED OVER TO TIME'S MERCY AND WAIT PATIENTLY FOR HEALING, IT IS COMING, RIGHT???? HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCES THIS, PLEASE SHARE WITH ME.

My surgery was 3/17/03. I also had terrible pain & went to the Emergency Room 6 days post-op. I thought for sure something had gone wrong. I have had five C-Sections & my gallbladder removed, & this was the most painful thing I had ever experienced. The GOOD News is, it finally went away. Took about 3-4 weeks, but it went away completely. My doc said sometimes there can be pretty much bruising internally from all the stuff they move around inside (didn't say this until after my 2 week return visit). But I hope you feel better soon! Hang in there. Three months out, & 55lbs down! It is really worth it!
