Question:
Anyone know about CareFirst of MD's policy about WLS?
I have CareFirst of MD (formerly BCBS) and the fine print says that they don't cover any type of weight loss drugs...does anyone know about WLS? Anyone out there with this carrier had WLS? — twistedvortex (posted on September 3, 1999)

Hi,
I have Carefirst of Maryland Freestate HMO. The only Doctor that I found
was Dr. Marcus, and he was great. They approved my surger in no time at
all, even though it is an exclusion in my policy. I had to prove that it
was a medically necessary surgery. I had to give them my diet history and
medical records, and my psych eval and I had no problems at all. I had the
surgery on 8/25/99.

I have CareFirst BCBS of Maryland. I was approved after
appealing. The exclusion said, "unless medically necessary".
Get a copy of your company contract with CareFirst, not just
your benefits book, but your CONTRACT. Your exclusion will
be listed there. If it says "medically necessary", you will
be approved after 1 appeal.
