Question:
Should I get a TT at 23 not having had children yet.

I'm 23 an my excess skin on my stomach has really been bothering me. I know it's not good to have a TT unless you have had children but i'm not planning to have children anytime soon and this bothers me. Also does anyone know if I work my legs out enough at the gym will they tone up and will the cellulite minimize?    — mamita093 (posted on May 12, 2005)

My surgeon says that having a TT before having kids is a waste of a good tummy tuck. However, if kids are way in the future, it may be worth having the flat tummy now, even if it will pooch out a bit after kids. It's not like you would be back where you started pre-TT.

I think on the question about your legs, it depends on if you carried alot of your weight in your hips and thighs as to how much you can get them to tone up. I carried the majority of my weight on my stomach and even at my heaviest my legs only measured 25 inches. They are now 19 and are extremely toned up and I'm 42. But, I have worked out like a fiend.

Dear Jen, I generally recommend to wait until after having children prior to a TT. However, if you understand and are okay with the fact that a very nice TT result can distorted by childbirth down the road, then you should should go for it! About the cellulite question: there are no really good ways to get rid of it. Working out is great for you in many ways, but probably won't make the cellulite go away entirely. I think probably the best treatment is called endermology (massaging and suctioning machine). Sincerely, Joshua Kreithen, M.D. Bradenton, FL lakewoodranchplasticsurgery.com

I am 26 and just had a TT in January. I am so happy I did it! No regrets! I plan on having a baby in the future, but wanted a flat tummy now! If after having a baby I need to deal with it again, I will. But as I look at it- nothing could be as bad as all the skin I had- no matter how much a baby stretchs me out. If you are planning on having a baby next year, then maybe wait it out, but if you are not sure what your plans are...and really want to get rid of the skin- go for it!

A word on the cellulite...it's a skin condition, not directly related to fat. If your legs were heavy and you lost a lot, the stretched skin will look very uneven and even "cobblestoned." Endermologie is FDA approved for cellulite reduction...for 6-8 months. At $100 per session...and you need 10 sessions...I thinks it's a dissappointment for many patients. When I do a tummy tuck, I also lift the upper thighs and side of legs through the same incision...this will smooth the skin a lot. Extreme, but effective.
