Question:
Nasty Ulcer at anastamosis site
I was scoped a couple of weeks ago and my doc sais i have a nasty ulcer at the anastamosis site. He said it was fairly large about 1 inch long and a half inch wide.He gave me some carafate and zegerid and wants to scope me again in four to six weeks. He said if it doesn't heal that i would have to have my surgery reversed. Just want yalls opinion on that. Can't they fix it without reversing my surgery. This was my first time being scoped i had my surgery 02/19/03 other then that i have had no other problems. Please let me know if anyone else has had this problem and what your outcome was. Thank you. — skyeyez26 (posted on May 2, 2005)

Queen of marginal ulcer here. I did very well with Prilosec on my first
few, but then I discovered carrafate and that moved it along even faster.
They've tried Prevacid and Nexium, but I get better results (for me) with
the prilosec. Eventually, I stopped getting them. h. pylori was ruled out

I haven't had a problem with ulcers personally, but do have an interest in
holistic medicine. I have read that cabbage juice is very beneficial to
help heal ulcers. Now, I don't know if you can just use the water off the
cabbage after you cook it or if you actually have to juice the cabbage
itself. I would think if you cooked it really, really well slowly for a
long period of time that the water you cooked it in should have absorbed
some of the juice. Might be worth a try??? Carmen

I've had ulcers too, not fun. The first one they cut out, but the other
responded only to nexium in double doses. Aciphex, prevacid, pepsid, and
some other didn't do anything. Carafate in liquid or pill form never did
anything for me. (The docs only gave it to me to help with the pain.) Get
a second opinion before you agree to have your surgery reversed.

Although I've had no problem with ulcers (have taken a pepcid AC everyday
since surgery on the advice of my surgeon) I agree with the other poster.
I'd get a second, and maybe a third opinion before I'd agree to reverse the
surgery. Especially since you're so far out and have had previous problems.

I had ulcers that wouldn't respond to medication and ended up having
surgery - but not to reverse the RNY! They removed the part of my stomach
that is responsible for producing the acid (called partial gastrectomy),
removed the ulcerated area, and made my pouch smaller. That was in November
- no further ulcers! Definitely get another opinion!
