Question:
I cannot tolerate any protein drinks...HELP!!

I have tried all sorts of drinks , many samples from vitalady, bought whey protein from GNC, vanilla, chocolate, and unflavored from unjury. I can not even stand to get it near my nose, it smells extremely vile, and when I take one sip it is so revolting that I usually end up vomiting. I know this sounds extreme but it is true!! I am lactose intolerant and drink lactaid but still not getting enough Protein, I am 9 weeks post-op and would appreciate any suggestions for protein other than these drinks that we can absorb.THANKS!!!    — Keishia R. Hi, well my surgeon has been doing the gastric bypass for 20 years now. he is very successful surgeon and has an excellent record. He personally says that we do not need protein shakes. he feels that they are just extra calaries. many things have high protien, beans, fish, barley, almonds,.seafood, plus all the meats. also there is a book out on the market called the protein counter...its great cause it also goes through many already made foods and even fast food,....i heard wendys chili is good, beef jerky, chicken jerky ect....anyways hope this helps a little. Hugs Dawn

You sound just like me, I went through TONS of them before I found one that I could not only tolerate, but enjoy. A friend from this site told me about Unjury chocolate protein powder. It tastes JUST like chocolate milk. They also have vanilla and unflavored. www.unjury.com If you email Jerome he can get you samples, his email address is on their site. It really would not hurt to try a sample, I haven't heard from anyone yet that doesn't like it. Good luck!

My feeling towards protein drinks are the same I tried a number of them with out success,my surgeon doesnt recommend them so I do not to use them. I am over 1 1/2 post op with no problems all my blood work has turned out fine. Just put protein first at meals. I eat lots a turkey and chicken breast even for breakfast.

I have the same problem!!!! I LOVED protein shakes pre-op and thought I was set. Post op I can't stand them. On top of that, at 1 week post op I got very bad lower GI distress which my surgeon thinks was due to the protein shakes. So that makes things worse. I ordered a bunch of samples from vitalady - but hate them all (oo, someone posted about whey protein being a problem.... I'll have to try maybe other types). I feel like I "should" be using them as one of the meal choices, but just can't handle them. My surgeon is very much against them anyway. Well, all I can do is try and get protein in other ways. I eat eggs, tuna, meat (pork, chicken, and beef - I'm happy that I tolerate those well, but I really have to chew, chew, chew), and other fish. I also have some nuts (also well chewed). They have good protein, but have a lot of fat and are pretty high calorie, so I try to be really careful with those. HUGS - I hope that you find something that works!

I couldnt tolerate any protein shake until I was about 10-12 weeks post op. so give it so time and try different flavors, or freeze them to a slush- there are so many that taste good. Nectar by Syntex, doesnt have any gross smell esp when mixed with a complimenting crystal light- Good luck

If you can't stand the tast of the standard protein drinks/shakes, try NECTAR, (I think it can be found on bariatriceating, com), it comes in apple, berry-cherry, and tropical fruit flavors. It mixes up completely by spoon, so no blender is needed, with a glass or water, and the taste was something else. I haven't had candy in years, but the Apple flavored NECTAR reminded me of a jolly rancher apple candy, it was really good! I did add a little more water than was called for, I don't like anything too sweet tasting or thick, and it is sugar free. Add a handful of crushed ice, it was so good! I'm putting in an order tomorrow for a couple of bottles, so when I want a break from the chocolate protein shakes, I'll have a choice in my 'weight-loss buffet'!

My protein "shake" is and has always been Moz cheese sticks or jerky. I have eaten over 1000 moz sticks since surgery. I have anywhere from 1 to 4 sticks each morning and usually again as my nightly snack. I get about 30 to 40 grams a day from cheese and/or jerky and the rest from other foods. I've lost 200 pounds in 15 months and my labs are excellent. Good luck!

I couldnt stand protein drinks either until others gave me ideas of how to mix them. Try mixing them in a mixer with ice, juice (orange, orange/strawberry etc) and add half a banana maybe some strawberry's, it ends up like a shake and tastes pretty yummy. I am careful not to have too much juice and I also use 100% natural juice. I know others put cinnamon in theirs, I have seen lots of recipes. You can also add it to surgar free pudding. I also get lots of protein from beef jerkey and I eat beef, chicken, turkey, cheese etc.

The ONLY protein drink I can tolerate is Atkins pre-mixed. I cannot tolerate any powered no matter how I make it. I am not sure that you can use Atkin with lactose int. but it may be worth a try. It comes in strawberry (my fav), vanilla, choc. and a coffee flavor( I forget the exact name). When I was a few weeks out I hated them all and just nibbled all the time on protein foods. It took me quite a while to get my taste back.

Try the fruit punch from Protidiet. It's like kool-aid and not a milk product. They have alot of other things too, like oatmeat. Most of their stuff is 14 grams per serving. I get it from I-ShopHere.Biz

My mom found this stuff... have you heard of benefiber? it is tasteless and scentless, well, they make a protien supplement that is the same way... it is calle beneprotein. I havent tried it yet, but if it really is like benefiber, it will be great. I mix my benefiber with sugar free koolaid, and I can't taste it at all. good luck though!!!
