Did you look in the library? This question is asked at least once a week.

This question gets asked so often because it asked by newbies, who are just
beginning their WLS investigation. Often these folks are looking for more
than a answer to this question but looking for companionship during what
can be a scary but exciting idea. Getting the weight off.I myself early on
asked questions to just know others were out there with similiar concerns
and problems.

It is the amount of intestine bypassed. A proximal is approximately 150 cm
or less bypassed, a medial is around 150 and a distal is over 150, usually
closer to 200 cm. Those who have way over 100 pounds to lose usually have
the distal. The more bypassed the more you malabsorb. The good part is
you don't absorb as much so you lose more, the bad part is that you don't
absorb the good stuff like vitamins and have to work harder to get in these
things thru supplements.
