without a laxitive, mainly milk of mag. the doc said i can take it everyday, and i have been , but i have terrible pains in my intestines all the time. i never have gas , i wish i would , i think that would help alot. if anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it. i am 4 1/2 months out have lost 80 pounds, i dont eat near enough because of the pain when i eat. thanks in advance. — terri R. If I feel the need to clean my bowels out a bowl of fruit loop or captain
crunch with milk does the trick. Not the healthiest but effective for me. I
don't dump but the combo of milk and sugar gives me loose bowels.

I would ask your doctor about getting on a daily regiment of fiber.

I have a lot of problems with constipation, too. I'm almost 6 months out.
What works for me is taking 4 Senokot a day, 2 in the morning and 2 at
night.

My Dr. just told me to try Sugar free Citricel. I'm taking it at night.
Not sure if it is going to be enough for me. Ask me in a week or so. I
think the bathroom issues are the most negative part of the post op
existance. I hate it when I don't feel emptied out. I'm a month post op.

Split pea soup. One cup = 17 grams of fiber, 19 grams of protien, 5 grams
of fat, 43 grams of Carbs though. The stuff has pretty good fiber and
tasty too.

My dr's office recommended Benefiber once a day. It is new, like Citrucel
but no taste at all, can be mixed with any liquid. She also told me that if
I had taken stool softeners (colace) before the surgery, that I would most
likely have to take them after. The combination is working for me. (Thank
God)Also good is Popeye's red beans and rice (tell them no rice)Tasty as
well as functional. Good luck!

Hi, I eat 5 to 6 halves of dried apricots before I go to sleep. Did this
before surgery also. Works great for me. Have ALWAYS been consipated, at
least for the last 20 years. Hope this helps.

I am a firm believer in Benefiber also! I had terrible constipation issues
for the first 6 or 7 months post-op. I started off adding fiber to my diet:
fresh fruit (an apple or pear a day), 1/4 cup Grape Nuts added to my
yogurt, popcorn, oatmeal. Still no-go! What finally worked for me was this
approach: gradually start the Benefiber, add 1 or 2 TBS to a glass of sugar
free Tang or Crystal Lite. ALSO, use Colace, a stool softener that will
help things start moving through. After 2 weeks you should be up to 2TBS of
Benefiber twice a day and off the Colace. Another thing we HAVE to get
through our minds post-WLS is WATER, WATER, WATER. I thought I'd been
drinking enough, getting in between 60-70 ounces a day. Now I get a minimum
of 80 ounces a day and things are moving much better. One big thing about
constipation people don't realize is that it is most often due to a lack of
water in the stool. Colace draws more water into your stool, making it
easier to pass. But in the end, we need to be vigilent about our water
intake. If you get to the point of real discomfort, don't wait for the
Colace to kick in, use a glycerine suppository. It's very important to keep
things moving through! Good luck to you! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -120lbs.

I asked this question not long ago myself. I did try the Smooth Move tea
someone suggested. It was not in the grocery store, you might have to go to
a health food store to find it. So far it has been working. It is not the
best tasting tea I have ever had, but not too bad if you put another highly
flavored herbal tea bag in with it and use about three Splenda packets! I
just pray it doesn't "poop out" (pun intended) on me like
everything else has. Good luck, and let us know how everything comes out!
We might as well laugh, right?

Hi - I'll tell you what works for me. I can do either one of the two any
day to make sure I have a bowel movement that day: Either I have a bowl of
natural crunchy granola with some soymilk or I will eat a couple pieces of
sugar free (russel stover's brand) chocolate. Both are delicious and both
make me go!! LOL I don't like fiber drinks or prunes or anything nasty like
that, so I opt for my tasty "laxatives" hehehe :) Good luck

Iris, Benefiber really is a great fiber supplement -- no grit and mixes in
without adding flavor or changing the texture. I do find that it mixes best
with cold stuff instead of hot. Great in sugar free drinks, pudding,
yogurt. Not so great in hot tea.

Popcorn. I eat 1/2 a bag of micro popcorn 2 or 3 times a week...causes gas
and gets me going.
