Question:
Anyone notice a change in their sense of smell
I am 14 months post-op and have been noticing lately that I have lost some of my sense of smell. I recently was painting and didn't smell it, making popcorn didn't smell it only after it started to burn, and my dog had wet on my rug and was not able to smell it(found it 4 days later). Pre surgery I had a great sense of smell. Has other postops experience this? will my sense of smell come back? — mc H. (posted on March 11, 2003)

I'm only 4 weeks post-op, but I've noticed a change in my sense of smell.
Kind of funny, really...everyone's breath now smells like curry to me. The
first time was when I went to my Dr. As she was listening to her
stethescope (with her face fairly close to mine), I smelled the strong odor
of curry. Even told my husband later that I thought it was pretty
unprofessional of her to not have a tic-tac or something after lunch if she
was going to be breathing in patients' faces. Later, my husband was
kissing me good-bye and I smelled the "curry" on him. After a
few tests (consisting of sniffing some other close friends' and family
members' breath...got some weird looks for that!), I've come to realize
that everyone smells like curry!

Boy have I noticed. When I first got out of the hospital it was
overwhelming. I could smell my drains in the sinks, peoples breath, BO, and
chicken soup smelled like dead chickens to me. Peoples cologne made me
sick. I am 5 months out now and it has gotten better or I have learned to
live with it.

I noticed a change in the way I perceived smells immediately after surgery
but now that I am 6 months post op I don't have that going on anymore. The
worst smell to me was PEOPLE! Everyone stunk at first lol. Even standing in
line at the store I could smell their breath, clothes, skin smell and it
about made me gag. Glad that's over with!!
