Question:
What are the chances this wont work for me?

I just had surgery 1-2-03 and i have lost only 36 pounds.I keep worring that this surgery is going to stop working.I even feel sometimes that I can still eat the exact amount that I could before the surgery.Every time i eat something I feel guilty. But I keep on eatting. What is wrong with me,I dont listen to the doctor or my friends on what i should be eatting, but i want to so bad.Am I going to be a failure at this as well?    — nicole K. What all are you eating? Maybe you could call up the insurance and ask if they cover visits to a counselor, so you can find out why this is happening. On the other hand, losing 36lbs is GREAT! That's nothing to be ashamed of, you should be proud of yourself!

I agree with Diana and that you may need to visit where you went to get your pysch eval. I know when I talked to mine I said that if I felt I needed to talk to someone I wouldn't hesitate to come see her for help. In fact she even put that in the letter to my surgeon. Please contact them. I am sure you would feel a lot better once you did. And losing 36 lbs is wonderful. Barbara Elko Nevada

Hi, Nicole. Congratulations on being down 36 lbs. That is wonderful progress...and only since January 2 of THIS YEAR! You are doing really good! My surgeon gave me these statistics: 70% to 90% ARE successful. :) You are still suffereing from what we all call 'head hunger'. Hang in there it WILL pass. It should be about over. I SO went though the head hunger. I truly LUSTED for all the old foods. What are you 'supposed' to be eating now? I started out on clear liquids, then to full liquids, then to pureed foods, then to soft foods and then FINALLY to general diet. Being on general diet has been good and not so good. There are so many foods I just can't eat yet. Meat for one. But I give it all a try and find I don't 'need' a lot of the foods anymore. I do hope this will always be the case. I do not EVER eat until I feel fullness and I always eat my protein first. You are satisified with such little portions, that most the time you don't have the desire to eat the carb part of your meal. One thing I do have going for me, is I was never a snacker. I just consumed HUGE helpings of things like pizza, burgers and fries, Chinese food. I have always loved salads and veggies. Sooooooo...I will eat my protein and then try to save a little room for some salad and veggies. Hang in there things do get better and easier. You are doing a GREAT job. (Open RNY 10/30/02 -106 lbs.)

I am down 51 lbs had my surgery 12/23/02, I am very proud of what I've lost but I too worry its not going to work for me, I'm sure I'm eating too much until I stop and measure my food. You would be surprised how little you are actually eating---try it! I also have to tell myself I will lose more and everythings going to be okay. You are doing okay, just relax.

Nicole? Have you discussed this with your surgeon? He/she needs to know this in order to help you!

Nicole, all of us worried from time to time that this surgery would not work for us, that we would be the ONE that failed this surgery. All normal feelings-think about it, we spent years doing all sorts of diets and failing at them all, thats a lifetime of learning that we fail at diets, so naturally, the feeling that this will not work is on our minds. I do think, though, that you need some counseling to help you thru. You should not feel guilty every time you eat, and you should not sabotage the doctors directions. So, please, make an effort to get some counseling. It will help you.

I had surgery on 4-3-02 and by Sept, I ahd staple line/suture line failure. I feel and my new surgeons feels that this was due to a Laproscopic procedure rather than an open one. I now have been depressed for 4 months vascillating wether or not I should have a revision. I am down 76 lbs, but really need to loose 60 more. So there are times that this procedure will not work, and I was one of the unluck 2% that is happened to.
