The ROUX en Y ( RNY )is the name of the surgery itself. The difference is
the DISTAL or the PROXIMAL. In the DISTAL procedure, there is more
intestine bypassed. Usually people who have 200 or more pounds to lose will
have the Distal. There is more malabsorbtion with the Distal. You will need
to research DISTAL and PROXIMAL to find out which would be right for you.

Hi, I had the proximal rny. By this, he only bypassed 75cm of intestine.
With distal (my doctor says) you would have had at least 100 up to 250 cm.
The more intestine bypassed, the more malabsorption takes place (calories,
fat, essential nutrients, etc). Statistically the weight loss is a little
slower with proximals(not always), but you don't have many or ANY of the
nutritional deficiencies often associated with the distal. Please remember
though, that we are all different, and there are distals who are healthier
than us proximals. My doctor will not do a distal because he has seen too
many bad results with some very ill patients. On the other hand, there are
doctors who won't do the proximal except in "lightweights". I
encourage you to talk to your doctor about your individual situation, and
do lots of research. Best Wishes.
