Question:
I am concerned.
I am a Native American and part of my spiritual and cultural traditions includes the Inipi ceremony or sweatlodge. As the name implies, these ceremonies create a similar environment to steam baths. My question is, after WLS (open RNY) when-if ever-will it be safe for me to participate in the Inipi? This is a very important part of my spiritual life. — Cheryl A. (posted on May 9, 2002)

Are you allowed to remain well hydrated during this ritual?

My Dr, Dr Simpson is very active in the Indian Community. I bet you could
e-mail him and ask the question. [email protected] or check out one of
his Friday night moderated chats here on obesityhelp.com He should know tha
answer.

I too am Native American - I don't think you'll have any problems once you
are all healed up. Make sure you are able to get in enough fluids before
the sweatlodge and after. Sometimes for several weeks after surgery it's
very difficult to get the required amount of water down. My only
suggestion is to be sure to be past this period first. I miss our
sweatlodges here. Asa, an elder, who use to lead them moved away and we
have no one "qualified" to do them here any more. Good luck.

My spiritual community does sweat lodges as well - they are great! I swear
I could feel toxins and fat melting away - it was a great visual while I
was losing rapidly. Just be sure to drink lots of water, as always. I find
now I do not get as uncomfortably hot, but I do get very dizzy when I get
up (a BP thing). It helps to pour water on my neck and head first.

I don't know if this will help but since my surgery I cannot take heat. I
get lightheaded and feel sick. Everyone is different, so you may be able
to, just be careful. Good luck.
