Question:
What do you refer to as a Protien drink?

I keep reading about all you post-ops and your protein drinks. I have done the protein drinks on several diets I have been on. Most recently I tried Carb-Solutions, mixed with water and really liked it (I doctor it up with a little heavy whipping cream - don't know if you would be able to use that post-op). Then I fill the rest of the cup with crushed ice. The result is an 18oz cup of protein shake. Is that what you all are referring to as a protein drink? I guess my questions is, how do you get all that down with your new little tummy?    — Margaret G. (posted on February 6, 2002)

There are a number of protein drinks on the market, but basically it is what ou describe in your post. The heavy whipping cream probably isn't a good idea post-op. It adds too much fat and calories, and you may end up being lactose intolerant post-op. 18 ozs is a lot to drink post op. I make my protein drinks with about 6-8 ozs of water or sometimes fat free lactaid milk. I do add ice or fat free yogurt for variety or some fruit and throw it all in the blender. This is usually what I have for breakfast. Good luck with your journey!

Protein drinks,.. now that is one BIG category! I had never even heard of them before I started researching WLS. Ditch the whipping cream now before your surgery,..too many calories and you will be shooting yourself and your surgery in the foot if you eat that stuff after your surgery. And you will NEVER be able to drink 18 ozs. at one time!!!! I would think the protein in the shake would break down before you could get it all in. I make my protein drinks with 6-8 ozs. of Crystal light, a scoop of protein powder and throw in 1/2 of a frozen banana. Blend well and it's not too bad! Of course this former sugar lover has changed a lot of things in her life in 8 wks.! I commend you for trying things and educating yourself before your surgery, you will do much better the more you know! Good luck to you!!!

I found one at GNC that I love and is great especially for work or if you are on the go...it is called Isopure, and comes in different fruit flavors. It makes a nice change to the thick protein shakes because it is the consistency of juice. One 20 oz. bottle has zero carbs, zero sugars, 160 calories, and 40 grams of protein! I usually chill them really well and sip them all day. Hope that helps some! :)
