Question:
Is it safe to have an Upper GI test?
I am 2 years post op and have not had any problems what so ever until about a month ago. I started vomiting after I would eat a meal, I would get sweaty, nausious, shakey, witha burning chest. My doctor,,,not surgeon, wants to do an Upper GI and check my sugar. ANy info would be appreciated. Kim — Kimberly R. (posted on January 23, 2002)

Kim, I had my stomach stapled 16 years ago and didn't have any problems
until recently. I had the scope down (the doctor knew I had the surgery),
but he was concerned that he would not be able to get an adult size scope
down through the small opening into the bottom of my stomach. He actually
used a pediatric scope on me and had no trouble. Talk with your doctor and
see what he thinks.

I had an upper GI about one week postop because of problems keeping things
down (turned out to be pancreatitis). It was HELL getting the barium down,
but I did it. Remember that liquid moves through you and doesn't pool up
in the stomach. It will keep moving through your GI tract. It won't be
fun, but it's definitely possible!
