Question:
What do you post ops treat yourself to now that your losing?
I have to laugh at myself lately. I'm so incredibly pleased with my success. I'm half way there! But I don't want to invest in clothes that will just need to be traded in soon, so I decided to treat myself another way. DIAMONDS!!!! I went a little crazy spending money I don't really have, but I just felt like I deserved it. It led me to wonder in what ways other post ops "treat" themselves for their successes. Please give me some less expensive ideas...hehehe. — Tracy L. (posted on November 26, 2001)

Well, I have definitely rewarded myself with vanity items, such as jewelry,
colored contact lenses, new clothes, a trip to the spa, etc. I was so used
to rewarding myself with food pre-op that I had to really adjust my
thinking. The biggest reward of all, though? FEELING GREAT.

Oooooooh! I love your style....diamonds are a girls best friend!
I've always treated myself with clothes. If I only wear something
for a couple of months, I don't care, I just pass it along to someone
else. Whenever I drop down to smaller size....I just go shopping!

My husband is sort of against spending money on shoes... he feels like once
you have a couple of pairs (sneakers, Tevas, hiking boots, that's it) you
have enough. Heck with that! Every 50 lbs I lose I get to buy a pair of
shoes!! I'm down 62 lbs after 10 weeks and haven't picked out my first
pair, but it's on my agenda for Saturday. :-)

Shoes! Purses! Gloves! Earrings (costume or silver)! All kinds of fun
stuff under $10. BUT, beware replacing a potential food addiction with
shopping. We only need SO much reward for getting our disease under
control. Not a constant flow of reward.

Clothes, jewelry, facials, pedicures...it all works for me! Fun, huh? I
too, have been feeling a little guilty. I was trying not to go too crazy
buying clothes on my way down to goal weight...but when I got to a size 8
it felt sooo right I merrily started filling in all the gaps in my wardrobe
in my new "perfect" size. Well, now, following my recent
abdominoplasty, guess what? I dropped another pants size. The size eights
just swim on me! And even some sixes are big! This is absolutely the most
incredible thing. Be forewarned...if you are considering abdominoplasty
you should know that it is not only your tummy that is affected. My
surgeon removed all the extra fat in my hips and upper thighs too! I was
amazed when the drains finally came out and the gauze and bandages came off
and I looked in the mirror, I didn't recognize myself. Where were my love
handles and those big lumps at the top of my thighs? Do you have any idea
how many hours I spent on stairmasters and in aerobics classes over the
past thirty years to get rid of those lumps? and the surgeon just goes
wack wack wack and they are all gone. He said, "by the way, I
liposuctioned your knees, too. I hope you don't mind". Amazing. Just
think, if we had been rich and had known, we could have just had all the
fat chopped off years ago. It truly is an amazing transformation. I am now
svelt. I want to run out and by all tight knit clothes. And, the funny
thing is, I would never even have considered the abdominoplasty if I didn't
have a hernia which needed to be repaired. Sooo...what I am suggesting is
that you not spend alot of money on clothes until after you have whatever
plastic surgery you may need to have after you reach goal. Buy
clothes...just not expensive one. I am a weekly customer at the Ross and
Marshall's in my neighborhood.

I've treated myself to a new hair color and having my nails done. I feel so
femenine now when I look down and see my long slender hands with the
beautiful painted nails. My husband spoiles me by frequenty taking me
clothes shopping. He loves to be my "go-fer" running back and
forth getting me diferent clothes to try (usually in smaller sizes than I
had picked out).

To sum it up ladies....it appears we just love pampering our womanly
bodies! Like that old song said "I enjoy being a girl!"

I too love to earn my jewlery treats by losing so many pounds. Each 25 I
make a special order from www.palmbeachjewlery.com and pick up something
usually from the sale or clearance area. So far I've got a beautiful
simulated tanzanite slide that matches a ring my hubby got me in Nassau
last year, and there is a great 10K 20" thick rope chain waiting for
me in my Christmas stocking---since I'm down 44 pounds now, I'm sure to get
the next 6 in the next month sometime! When I need a nice boost for any
reason now, I simply go to the Bally's on the other side of town where
there is a swimming pool, sauna, steam room & hot tub and change my
daily workout to swimming laps instead of the eliptical trainer, bike &
weight machines. After getting dressed, I feel so relaxed, just like I
spent a day at a much nicer spa.
Another fun thing I do, is when I find I need new bras/underwear, I make
the 1 hour trip to our near by outlet mall and get some really nice stuff
at the Vanity Fair shop. I found that the clearance bras at Lane Bryant,
have underwires that poke and hurt after 2 wearings, and their briefs with
support give out real soon too. At the outlet I get 2 for the price of 1
on everything, except for red taged items---sometimes you get really great
bras & fancy pants for just a few bucks!

Well, I'm only 10 days post-op, but I have been a hermit for so long, that
when I just weighed in and had lost my first 22 pounds in a little over a
week, I bought myself my favorite perfume that I hadn't bought in years
because I never went anywhere to wear it! WOO HOO!!!!! :-)

New books or magazines of new interest to me (Sports Illustrated
for Women is great!), new hair color highlights, hot baths,
fires in the fireplace- and, my FAVORITE- Flannel!!!! Flannel
boxer shorts that the teenagers wear, long flannel pants,
flannel sheets- what can I say- I love flannel- especially
this time of year:)

I am pre-op still and I know I will want to buy some new things but, I have
to agree with Michelle Curran about switching addictions....it happens very
cunningly. Beware you don't trade fat for debt. Compulsive spending can
get REALLY out of control if you aren't careful.

Hi all,
I'm 9 weeks post-op and down 42 lbs. At 5 weeks, my sister and I took a
last minute trip to Cancun, Mexico. It was really an R&R trip. When I
reach goal(80 more lbs), I'm going back to Cancun and do the whole tourist
bit.
I've treated myself to a few new clothes, but I do have a whole closet full
of varing sizes already. I'm pretty set for the next few months.
Good luck to you all.

I have stuck to pratical things so far. A new haircut, new glasses (I have
to wear tri-focales and I always bought the lenses with the lines in them
because I was too cheap to pay for the no-lines, but this time I got the
no-lines). A new pair of sun glasses as well. But, that is all so far. I
am only 3 weeks post-op and with Christmas coming, I'm not about to go out
on a limb and over spend. It will all come in good time and I am looking
forward to rewarding myself many times over the next year.

Black leather pants!!!! Woo Hoo, I feel like a million bucks in them! Also,
2 pairs of suede pants, a suede skirt and matching jacket,a new leather
jacket,( I don't know what the obsession with leather and suede is all
about, but what the heck, why fight it!) lots of belts (which was a dream
for me to wear with a tucked in shirt and jeans!), really cool boots, lots
of great clothes at bargain prices, etc., etc.! As the Old Navy ads say,
"shopping is fun again!"

With Jen on disability money is real tight, but after her surgery I want us
to sppend at least a few days at Disney World before she returns to work. I
figure a few days in Florida in January will be good exercise in a nice
warm place. Originally I planned a short cruise before Jens surgery, but
the terrorists kinda spoiled that idea:(

I hit the halfway mark recently, losing 72 pounds in 3 months. I was so
thrilled, my partner and I rented a nice hotel room with a whirlpool and
had a relaxing weekend away. Great stress relief, and the pool and
whirlpool felt wonderful on my rapidly changing body !

Hi Tracy! I am not a post op yet (5 more months to wait until surgery). But
I have very big rewards planned. I am a life-long horse lover, but sold my
last horse 20 yrs ago to go to college and have not been able to ride since
because of my MO. I have taken my daughters to riding lessons for years -
but I am going to be the active one in the future! I am going to start
taking lessons again when i lose 100 lbs and I am going to buy my daughters
and I our own horse when I meet other goals along the way. For far too long
I have sat on the side lines and let my dreams and passions fade as I aged
and had problems with finances, MO, and depression. WLS has given me some
hope for the future and I have begun to remember that i once had hobbies
and activities i enjoyed other than working full time and doing the laundry
and housekeeping on weekends.

Still Pre-op, but My wife, and I, and some of our closest friends will be
taking a trip to Ft. Lauderdale to visit another friend that has access to
a 48 foot sailboat. We will trip down to the Keys to swim with Nurse
Sharks, and then onto the Bahama's. we plan on finding an out of the way
island we can have to ourselves. By then I will be about 10 months Post op,
and be at a good weight to be seen in swim trunks again. I can't wait to
get tan. I haven't anything but a farmers tan in 20 years. This is going to
be SWEET!

I'm scheduled for surgery on Dec. 17, 2001, and after I lose some weight, I
plan to go out and buy a new bicycle so I can go riding with my son. I
haven't been on a bike since my early 20's (I'm now in my 40's) because I
got bigger and bigger. I believe that if I dared get on a bike, my rear
view would look like an orange sitting on a toothpick to people behind me..
. . LOL, but not for long!

Hi Tracy, I haven't bought a ton of clothes, as I have 80 lbs more to go,
but I have bought myself jewelry, mostly silver, perfume, got a new
haircut, dyed my hair blond for the first time in 12 years, and I do much
more shopping then I ever have. I used to hate shopping, thinking that
everyone was looking at how fat I was. Now I can't wait to get to all my
favorite stomping grounds. I go somewhere everyday, even if it's just to
pick up groceries. I used to make my husband do all the shopping. But
diamonds sounds like a good idea, hehe, you only live once.

My first treat was getting my nails (manicure and pedicure)done. Recently
I bought a new pair of jeans (on sale) that look great with my black
leather boots (old). I also just replaced all of my makeup (something from
tv, and some things from avon). I seem to be spending more time on my
personal appearance.
I need to go to the goodwill store to buy more clothes.
Have fun and be careful$$$
