Question:
I'm 2 weeks post-op and wonder if I'm eating too much

I have no trouble with foods, and had a small amount of chinese for dinner. I eat at most about 1/2 cup of food per meal. Is this normal, too much, I don't want to eat too much and stretch the pouch. So far no dumping or vomiting.    — Gina R. (posted on June 1, 2001)

Gina, Hi . I am also 2 weeks post. My surgery was 5/17. It does not sound like you are eating too much. I am eating like 6 times per day and getting in like 500 caolories a day. If I dont eat this often, I am getting shaky and headaches. Did your doc give youa sample post op diet? Just make sure you get the the protein in for healing and energy. Good luck.

Hi. I am 5 weeks post op. Believe me, if you eat too much, you'll know it. I was thinking the same thing last week. I started averaging my calories I was only eating between 500 and 750 a day. I have had times that I wait too long between meals and I get very hungry so I eat too much and too fast--It definately will make you throw up. The food has no where to go. If you want some sample meals, my Doc has a website that has a Gastric Bypass Book. In this book a nutritionist gives some samples. The address is www.smallscar.com. Counting the calories for a couple of days really helped me. Plus, I bought some fat free, sugar free versions of some of my favorite treats, and although I can only eat about half of one, I satisfy my craving.

We have to eat, and I agree with Kim who said that if you were eating too much you would know it. When I eat, I want to enjoy it, so that means only eating a tiny amount and stopping the very instant I feel that "twinge" of fullness, even if I have to spit out the bite in my mouth. The pain after eating too much is not worth it. Try to savor your new relationship with food and not be freaked out worrying about if going to lose weight or blah, blah, blah. As long as your concentrating on protein first, and getting 60 grams a day, you're fine.
