Question:
How soon can protein bars be started? Can protein shakes be frozen & eaten?
I'm one week postop (open rny) and those protein shakes and I are just not the best of friends. I've have used crysal light and ice in them which helps, but can I completely freeze them and eat them with a spoon without effecting the protein? When can I start protein bars-my doctor's diet doesn't say? Are they not as nutritionally sound as the shakes? — Brenda H. (posted on May 8, 2001)

Yes, if it's whey protein, it can be frozen, just not heated. In fact, I'd
love to try my PS100 in maybe a dixie cup, frozen concentrate? Let me know
how they turn out! Bars are like food protein, so figure 'em at 50% or
less. My personal feeling about 'em is that if they are high protein, no
sugar, then half a bar might make a nice little snack, if you're doing the
5-6 tiny meals a day. Fills the pouch, does no harm..... But I just don't
count the protein in 'em toward my daily total. Rather go for the sure
thing.
