At the Bariatric Treatment Center, the nutrionist tells us how much protein to get per day based on our height and weight. My goal per day is 75 grams, which is pretty high. I can't abide with much of the protein shakes either but some of the other high proteins also have high carbs or sugars. Have you tried the Ultra Pure Protein Shakes? They are realllly good. You can get them at GNC to see if you like them and they have a return policy so if you buy something and don't like it, you can take it back. Just an idea. Good luck! Diane C. D

I too could not handle the protien drinks for the first 3 weeks. I kept trying. I settled on Problend 55 alpine vanilla ( I get from vitalady.com) and mix it with diet V8 splash in either tropical or berry flavor. I like that. As for bars I have tried them all. I can't handle them. they lay like lead in my pouch. If you read the instructions on all those protein bars it says to drink at least 16 oz of fluid while you are eating them. Well that is a no no for us for sure. I am now 4 month post -op and still cant handle the bars, but the drinks are fine. I ahve lost 80 lbs from proximal rny

Kevin, I don't know about bars, but I heard a tip on how to help get those protien shakes down better. Add granuals of sugar free Jello to the mixture.

Solid Protien brand in Blueberry Cheesecake supplies 34 gms of protien, 3 gms of sugar, 2 gms. of fat (I'm going on memory here, because I am out!) I like these because the tartness of the blueberries cut down on the richness of the psuedochocolate and protien. Another thing to keep in mind, the more protien supplements you eat, the more you develop a taste for them and soon, they go down quite easily. Good luck!

I have tried MANY protein bars & can recommend a few: The best, by far, I have found so far are the "Ultimate Lo Carb" brand ones. Lemon meringue is good, Chocolate smores supreme is better (yummy)& vanilla bean is the absolute best I've ever eaten. It is really something special. These run about 230 calories, 20 g protein, 0 g sugar. Another good one is "Pure Protein" brand blueberry cheesecake, with 270 calories, 30 g protein, 4 g sugar. I also think "Atkins Diet" brand Almond Brownie flavor isn't too bad- it has 230 calories, 20 g sugar & 0 g sugar. "Protein Revolution" brand makes a creamy chocolate peanut butter cup that's pretty good, too. It has 230 calories, 22 g protein, 0 g sugar. I get most of these at an independent health food store, as far as I know, GNC doesn't carry some of these. You might try calling around. The nice thing about protein bars is they're easily transportable & work as meal replacements, too. There are times & places a protein shake just doesn't work well. I always take a protein bar or two with me when I go skiing. Hope this helps.
