Question:
Do you have days when eating makes you feel sick?
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF DAYS OUT OF THE MONTH THAT EVERYTIME I EAT(IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT IT IS), I JUST FEEL SICK. I CALL THEM MY BAD FOOD DAYS. I EAT AND ABOUT 1/2 HOUR LATER I FEEL NAUSEAUS AND QUEASY AND TIRED. I AM 5 MONTHS POST OP. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THESE DAYS? — michelle M. (posted on December 13, 2000)

Hi Michelle, I am ten months postop and there are often days when eating
anything makes me feel sick. I usually find that I need to eat soup on
those days or, surprisingly, cheese. Those two things ALWAYS seem to go
down. Other things give me a feeling that is hard to explain (especially to
non-WLS people), I get a feeling like a lump of lead laying in the pouch.
It hurts!! and it doesn't matter who small an amount or large, it feels the
same. I don't understand why--I just assume it is because my body is still
adjusting to the surgery and still healing.

Hi. I am six months post-op and I have a couple of days like you are
describing every week. My stomach actually hurts and I feel very nauseous.
It is instantly relieved if I can throw up. I too can almost always
tolerate cheese and soup on those days. My surgeon has ordered an Upper GI
for next week because he is concerned that I have developed a small ulcer.
I don't know if you should be concerned about an ulcer...my "bad food
days" are occurring more frequently than yours'...but I thought I
would share my doctor's concerns with you for your consideration. Best of
luck.

I am sorry to hear about others having nausea, however, I am a bit relieved
to find I am not alone. I am over a year post-op and just recently started
experiencing nausea, except mine seems to coincide with my having an empty
stomach. I haven't actually vomited, but it certainly is uncomfortable.
Has anyone else out there had this experience so far along post-op? I also
have a large, ventral (upper abdominal) hernia which I am to have repaired
soon. I don't know if this could have anything to do with it.
Thanks!

Been there, done that, own the t-shirt concession! My "bad food
days" seem to be connected somehow to my menstrual cycle. About a
week or so before the big event, I have anywhere from three to six days of
being unable to tolerate anything other than liquids and CEREAL, of all
things. Less than a good time, to be sure. But, on the other hand, I'm
almost eight months post-op, 115 pounds gone forever, and, most of the
time, feel great! I agree with the other suggestions that you get yourself
checked to rule out other physical causes (like an ulcer), but I'd be more
likely to think it's your body trying to catch up with itself. With WLS we
rid our bodies of TONS of estrogen (which is stored in fat) and other
hormones, so problems like what you describe, and what I experience, are
almost to be expected. When the feeling strikes, rest if you can until it
passes. You might also want to "track" when and why this happens
to you -- that's how I found out it's the week or so before my period in my
case. It could be something you're eating, or something you're feeling.
Warm skinny supportive thoughts your way always,
