What are some hospital rules regarding spouses during hospital stays

this is only my take from my recent hospital experience. i am post open rny at presbyterian in charlotte. my husband spent every night in a recliner in my room. he would have gone home after the first night, but i am his big baby and he stayed on my request. he did go home during the day to shower and stuff when i had other visitors.the nurses are the ones who offered to bring a roll-a-bed in the room for him--although there was not actually enough room for it. and he was very cautious not to bring any snacks or food in my room.(I have developed the sniffer of a bloodhound).but, the rules probably vary from hospital to hospital, so give the nurse a big grin, and make your request if thats what you both want, but you certainly don't have to, i just felt safer. hope this helps---toni saliby

I just recently surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, and if it was ok with my hospital roomate than it was ok with the nurses. Hope this helps. Good luck to you :)

Hi...At Ocean Springs Hospital in MS...they were great! I stayed on my own the first 3 nights (by my choice), and then I wanted Joe to stay with me...and that was fine with them. In fact, he helped me a great deal...he was a big help to the nurses also...God bless him! Anyway, I think most hospitals are okay with it...hope yours is! God bless~

The best thing for you to do is to call the hospital and ask what their policy is. I was in a private room and my WONDERFUL husband stayed with me the whole time. The first two nights he slept on the floor. The last night one of the nurses found a roll away bed for him and he was a lot more comfortable.

My 17-year-old daughter was the one who stayed with me the entire time. They brought in this pull-out bed and they seemed to really enjoy catering to her too (I had a private room). They got her shower ready for her every day too. Nurses are so nice!

If you are in a private room or even a semi private room that is not occupied with anyone other than yourself you may have your spouse or whomever else stay with you. It gets iffy when a person of opposite sex stays in the room when you have a room mate. Good luck!
