Question:
My Doctor has put me on a strick fluid intake.
I am only allowed to drink four ozs. per hour with no drinking for one hour before and one hour after each meal. Are all restrictions on water intake the same for everyone or does it vary by Doctor. I had my surgery on August 7th. Is this restriction because I am still new to the surgery and does it change as time goes by. I had open RNY and have lost 27 lbs. Thank you — andrea C. My fluid intake instructions are as follows: no fluids 5 minutes before
eating or a half an hour after eating. Sips, not gulps (although I can get
about a mouthful in comfortably). 64 oz. a day, alchohol and caffeine
don't count, but popsicles, broth, juice, skim milk and non-caffeinated
beverages do, no carbonated beverages...but I was never limited as to how
much per hour I could drink. I usually get most of my fluids in the
evening.

At first, it's 1 oz per 5 minutes. As time goes on, we increase to
comfortable amounts. After the clear liquid phase and life is beginning, e
drink right up to the first bite. We wait 30 or more minutes after meals
to drink. 64 oz a day MINIMUM. But caffeine cancels water. So, if hou
drink a 12 oz diet pop, you need to drink 12 oz of water and now you are
back at 0.
