Question:
Just out of curiousity.. How many of you out there have NEVER experienced dumping?
I am 5.5 mo.post op. Open proximal RNY. I know this sounds silly, but I am feeling disapponted that I don't dump!I can eat anything without any ill-side affects at all. {Small portions of course} I feel as though I'm not losing weight as fast as I should be because of this.I've only lost 74# which I could not have done w/o the surgery. I can eat the foods that I should'nt, so the temptation to eat it is still there. When I went into surgery, I thought I would never be able to eat those "sinfull" foods again, now I'm disappointed because I can. How do others deal with this? I'm rambling, but hope this makes sense to someone. Thanks, Dani — Dani J. (posted on June 29, 2000)

I have been addicted to sugar my whole life and I was hoping the dumping
effect from RNY would change that for me. It hasn't. I am 3 months postop
and have never dumped. I can eat quite a bit of sugar with slight stomach
ache being the only consequence. For this reason I try very hard to stay
away from sugar. I don't bring it into the house anymore. This surgery is
only a tool and some of us still need to fix our heads to make this weight
leave our bodies forever. I have noticed that sweet things taste ALOT
sweeter than they did to me preop and I don't eat anywhere near the sugar I
used to eat preop (it was nothing for me to eat a carton of ice cream in a
matter of hours or a whole bag of Double Stuff Oreos in one sitting). I
still have sugar cravings but they are alot more managable since having the
surgery. I try to have a sugar free fudgcicle or something when I have a
craving. On the one hand we should be thankful that we've never gone
through that awful dumping, but on the other hand it means that if we are
prone to sugar addiction we need to be extra careful around it. Whenever
I'm tempted to eat something sugary I stop and think about what I'm doing
and remember why I had this surgery. I've only lost 60 lbs so far (still
have about 140 to go) but my life has changed already. I feel myself
holding my head up just a little higher in public, I'm able to walk two or
three blocks without feeling like I'm going to pass out, I feel more
comfortable going out in public, I'm able to take care of some person
hygiene things that I couldn't do 60 lbs ago, etc. You should be proud of
your weight loss so far...74 lbs in 5.5 months is great! I know that even
with this surgery I will have some issues with sugar for the rest of my
life but the surgery has made the sugar demon a little weaker and me a
little stronger so I have a pretty positive outlook. Good luck to you.
