Question:
Has anyone undergone an Upper G.I test Post op?

Were you able to tolerate the "stuff" you have to drink? I'm almost 5 mo. post-op and am scheduled for Upper G.I. in the A.M. {I have this "sloshing sound" in my chest when I'm excercising. Dr. thinks all is well, just wants to make sure!} Thanks, Dani    — Dani J. (posted on June 4, 2000)

I had this same test when I was four days post op(my surgeon requires this prior to your release). Just to check if there was any leakage. The test result were fine, but boy did it make me sick (the fluids they make you drink are nasty) I had my first dumping experience. I will never forget how awful I felt. Since you are five months out you might not have the same reaction...:)

Hiya Dani! I had an upper GI (like lots of people on this site) when I was one day postop. I had no adverse reaction at all. I was so thirsty that even the concoction I had to drink tasted good to me! I was so happy to have the test cause I was given two ounces of water to drink as soon as they delivered me back to the ICU! I am sure you'll be fine and good luck to you!

Hi, I had an upper GI. I stressed to the technicians (and then to the doctor performing the test) that I had a gastric bypass, and that my stomach size was radically reduced. I told them I was very concerned about all the stuff they wanted me to take. They ususally have two things for you to consume - some fuzzy granules that put air in your stomach and then two types of liquid with the barium in it. I told the doc how concerned I was about the fuzzy granules - I was afraid if I consumed a full dose it would be too much for my small stomach size. So he did not have me take the fuzzy granules, I just had to drink the liquids which pass through your pouch very quickly. The liquid they give you will/can cause constipation, so be aware of this - I was severely constipated for several days.
